great stuff

This piece has a mood and tone to it that takes things in a different, slightly off kilter way. I love it mucho.

just browsing by, this film really has a very well-made look to it, a polish.

Slacker Tim is cool.

The NO girls

I liked it.

How did you go about casting all of the "NO girls?" That was my favorite scene.

Re:the no girls

Emily Bach, the woman who plays Tim's Ex,  Helped me by calling a bunch of actor friends.  I had no idea who was coming or how many. I did pull art director, Heather Glass, put her in front of the camera as well as my wife.  We also talked a few of the waitresses from the location, the two young girls. I knew that I needed alot of girls to make it work. I got lucky.

The casting was great! The main character really put me at unease which I'm sure is what you were going for. The music also really helped with that.

The quality is great? What did you shot on? I'm guessing HD.

I wonder who did the music, John..... Hmmmmmm

Initially I looked at John when I heard the temp track and said, "are you sure about this?" but then 15 minutes in of making a creepy soundtrack, I was sold on the idea.

What did we shoot on?

It was shot with a JVC 100HD.  A great camera.  The DP was my brother Gil Whitney, who is a Shooter and Gaffer in the Columbus market.  All the crew were friends from my freelance days when i worked on TV spots and anything else that would pay the bills.

Thanks John

Very interesting.

So what do you say to them to get to be in the short?

Did you have them sign a release?

Great Cast

I recently read the opinion that "casting is 65 percent of directing." Not sure how true it is, but your casting is great. But, everything works in this short, from the script to final editing.

This was a great start to my day. Thanks.

Music and releases

Peter John Ross Did the music to help with the creepy feeling that I was looking for.  He took it and ran with it.

As far as the No girls I just let them read the script and explained to them that the seaquence was important to the film.  They all signed releases. that is a lesson that I learned when one of my films was on The independant film channel.  They asked for releases and I was not prepared. I had to scramble to get releases signed. Not fun.
I got them all and the short aired but from then on I make sure that I get the actor to sign a release BEFORE they go in front of the camera.

Casting 65% of Directing

Casting is a huge part of the process.  The
ability of a director to recognize if an actor is right or wrong for a part is
paramount.  You can have the best script and if you don't have the cast to
execute it your doomed.  I try to work hard to cast people that I know can
handle the material and make my job easier.  Once on set, if I've done my
job, the actor may only need a little nudging to get the results that I
want.  So to say the casting is 65% of directing, I would even put it up
to the 70% range.
