Official Invitation for our Next KarmaCritic Contest

FableForge's picture
1021.jpg

Alright good people, here's the deal!

Our next contest begins tomorrow!

Our contest in plainspeak and quickiexplained: phase 1 is about "who can write the best script in a given genre and theme" while phase 2 is about "who can actually shoot the best film based on that winning script from phase 1". Everyone votes everywhere. At the end we put all films and scripts together (as well as behind-the-scenes footage, interviews and other extras) inside a well-made DVD, and we try to sell it. Profits will be split amongst everyone, larger shares to the winners.

Now the details:

PHASE 1

Phase 1 of the show is a writing contest. All KarmaCritters are welcome, and its free to become a KarmaCritter. You may submit as many scripts as you want, provided they meet the following criteria:

  1. Genre must be HORROR-COMEDY (gotta be scary, gotta be funny)
  2. Theme must be "Practice Makes Perfect".
  3. Lenght must be 7 to 13 pages (not counting cover).
  4. Finished script must be submitted to KC before Christmas day 2007.

Points number 1 and 2 are at my discretion, points 3 and 4 are pretty objective.

Now, the following is not mandatory, but just friendly advice: keep in mind you're writing potentially for a short film with a 250 dollar production budget cap. Let this knowledge help you drive your choices regarding setting, number of actors, FXs, etc.

  • The winning script is announced on Christmas day, and becomes the cornerstone of phase 2.
  • All 10 finalists must record 3-minute interviews (Questionarie will be provided, background is green-screen).

PHASE 2

Once again, everyone is welcome to submit an entry. The requirements:

  1. Must be based on the script that wins phase 1.
  2. Must be produced with no more than 250 dollars (not including film equipment; keep your receipts!)
  3. Must be between 7 and 13 minutes long.
  4. Finished film must be submitted to KC before March 1st 2008
  5. Must include 7 to 13 minutes of Behind-The-Scenes footage

Once again, points 1 and 2 are subjective to my discretion (I reserve the right to request copies of your receipts if a dispute ensues), while 3, 4 and 5 are pretty objective.

  • The winning film is announced on March 1st!
  • All 10 finalists must record 3-minute interviews too (see phase 1).

NOTES ON BOTH PHASES

  • To submit, simply upload your PDF script as usual, but write in the description that this is an entry for the contest, I'll take care of the rest.
  • As with SUBLIM, as soon as an entry is submitted it becomes eligible for votes; so the early birds do have an advantage (Ex. a script submitted on the bleeding edge of the deadline on Dec 24 technically is eligible, but will it have enough time to gather votes and become a finalist?)
  • The finalists are the top 10 entries with the most votes AND an average score of 70 or better. Each phase has its own 10 finalists.
  • All finalists will be featured in the DVD and share in profits from it (more details below).
  • Copyright over their own work always remains the property of the contestant who submits it, but KC will have the right to compile and sell this work in a DVD, for which you'll receive a percentage of the profits. Portions of your work may also be used in promotional materials.

DISTRIBUTION AND PROFIT SHARING

  • We dont yet know who will replicate the DVDs and at what cost, but we know how the unitary price breaks down:
  • Unitary Price = Replication Cost + Distribution Cost + Profit. In other words, when we sell a DVD, first we substract what it costed to copy the DVD, then what it costed to distribute it, and the rest is our Profit. Said Profit is split as follows:
    • 10% to Eric Bumpus for Production work (which includes dealing with replicator, distributor, creating DVD menus, editing, titling of interviews, subtitles, etc).
    • 10% to the winner of Phase 1.
    • 40% to the winner of Phase 2.
    • 1% to each of the 9 non-winning finalists of Phase 1
    • 3% to each of the 9 non-winning finalists of Phase 2
    • 4% for publicity and promotion of future contests
  • Profit shares will be sent by Eric in the frequency that makes the most sense. This will be determined once replication and distribution details are known. Most likely we'll use PayPal.

TITLE AND IMAGERY

Questions

Once you upload your script is it "locked"? Can you modify and change it? Allowed re-writes like Sublim?

Also, can the directors release their films on their own?

How about the losing scripts? Can they be produced and posted elsewhere?

The reason I ask is that if I do a film I may want to be able to post it places whether it wins or not, same with the script.

Are these things addressed somewhere?

I think this is a good and fun idea, but the more I think about it, the more legal holes I find.

Yup, endless re-writes are allowed, nothing is locked until the deadline, just like SUBLIM.

As for the rest of your questions:

Official Announcement wrote:

That pretty much means the answer to them all is "yes".

Legalese

After just having an extended discussion with a lawyer about copyright issues (they were incorrect about it.) I would really recomend some kind of printed or written agreement with the screen writer, and then with the filmmakers as well.

Absolutely!

Yup, just like we did with SUBLIM:

http://www.karmacritic.com/contestte...

I'll have all the paperwork ready :)

veenotph's picture

Oh goodie

Might I suggestmoving the deadline to the week before X-mass. Thus giving a chance for everyone's script to be available.

If I finish and submit my script the day before the deadline, it may hurt my chances. Granted I know, the seener the script is in the more likely to be read, but. . .

Deadlines and Reveals

Well, on Jan 1st we have the reveal of who the SUBLIM winner is. I guess we could make it a double reveal day, and use that day for the winner of Phase 1 too. That would give the week after xmas for everyone who submitted in the bleeding edge of the deadline to gather some votes. So aye, we could have it both ways, we could have deadline on Xmas, and still a week after that to gather votes. That works.

Then again, the advantage early submitters get is there 100% by design.. we wanna get this rolling, and reading some scripts will inspire others so aye, I want to see some entries rather sooner than later :) Cant wait to see what you come up with!

Been Brainstorming

Now that we have all the elements, I have been doing some brainstorming, horror-comedy with a "practice makes perfect" them is definatley a challenge.

I want to get something online ASAP and work on re-writes, rather than wait till the last minute.

Trying to decide on my monster.

Forest

to all the scriptwritters

have you ever seen in a forest

what a woderful place for horror and comedy

please make it easy in an order to low budgeting

we could spend a couple of days in the forest to make our movie

or with a little mix of other locations

everyone have a car too

commarcal roads are easy to afford too

FableForge's picture

Hear Hear!!

Yes!

Please writers, keep in mind the budget...!! Forests are easy to find, so are roads and everyone has a car. Not everyone has an Asylum or a Laboratory :)

Question: do we need permission to shoot film in places like parks or cemetaries? Does anyone know?

MelioraEric's picture

Permissions

Theoretically, any public location should have permission for usage. Especially if you're going to be using prop guns, etc. And, you really want police to know that you're filming.

For state or city property, like parks, you go through your mayor's office or through your state film commission for permission. It's a tricky line on public property like that. Becuase they may want you to fill out all sorts of paperwork, with fees, etc. I typically stay away from any government-owned land.

Even on private property, unless you own it or someone you know owns it, like a business, you should always at least ask.

Just my opinion on the matter.

 sounds like fun.

Cool sounds like fun.

Darn It!

I made up about 5 horror-comedy, and/or horror shorts today, unfortunately...none with the "practice makes perfect" theme...developing.

I really regret suggesting

I really regret suggesting these themes. They were meant to be taken as a joke. I mean c'mon, "Practice makes perfect?"

I want to make up for this bad idea by suggesting some newer ideas on how to make it work.

The Perfect Kill/Getting away with murder - Going about committing this sin has to be done just right. No screws up.  Planning ahead and making sure everything is precise. Could turn into a game of Clue or Alfred Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder comes to mind.

Someone is so driven to reach their goal (become a dancer/performer/artist/famous/etc., that they'll do anything to get there. No matter what sacrifice they have to make or whatever competition they have to eliminate. They'll do it.

Someone gives up their dream and now in the future they look back on it a regret giving up now that they live a total life of misery. If only they kept at it. Maybe someone else achives that dream and they grow jealous of them. Maybe they want to kill or curse that person.

Also, a Masters of Horror Episode called Incident on and Off a Mountain Road comes to mind. The protagonist married a survival freak and he used to make her train in self defense and combat. She didn't want anything to do with it and ended up leaving him after he became abusive. But then one night when her car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, she is stalked by a killer and now her survival skills are put to the test. Maybe something similar can be done. Someone forced to pursue another's goal, and it pays off in the end during the worst of moments.

Hi Brendan

I can come up with tons of "practice makes perfect" stories but the challenge really is the 250 buck limit combined with 7 - 13 minutes, combined with horror-comedy.

None of the above suggestions seem like horror-comedy, I don't think, I guess they could be.

I guess if you put Chevy Chase in The Shining, it would have been funny? ;) Hey wait, thats a good idea, National Lampoon's Haunted Holiday Vacation.

I hope to crap out a story, but if I don't I will be real interesting to see what the others come up with.

There actually have been very few horror-comedies made when compared to other genres.

Nice to stretch your writer's brain though, makes regular writing seem easier.

Good Horror Comedies/Horror films with Comical aspects:

Freak Out:

Bad Taste

Evil Dead 2

The Toxic Avenger

Cemetery Man

Re-Animator

Brendan Morrisey's picture

WRONG!

I think that theme can actually be applied to Re-Animator, Evil Dead 2, and Freak Out.

FableForge's picture

My "Practice Makes Perfect" Idea

Hey Brendan, its a perfectly valid theme! Plus, the tribe spoke and voted it up, it cant be that bad! :) And Meredith: I agree completely: restriction do make for great brain exercise! Restrictions force us to be creative!

I havent started writing mine, I'm still letting it grow in my mind a little bit more, but its going to be about....

A wannabee serial killer than bungles everything, but out of sheer luck keeps the police baffled and taking him for a mastermind. Then he finally gets it right and so, gets caught :)

Something like that :)

Good list Brendan!!

I couldnt finish the contest page last night, but I will today, we'll post all of this there :)

John Meredith's picture

Brendan

Okay, I see what you mean now.

I guess it depends on how strict we are on theme and genre.

Maybe I am being to self-criticle.

Is there going to be a big hoopla over whether the scripts match the theme and genre perfectly?

It would probably be best if you had it as a PDF file, (try http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfc... if you dont know how to generate PDFs), but thats optional: its readable as it is, and its officially in the contest now! I'll read it and post my comment on it, welcome to KarmaCritic!!
