VOTE VOAT: it hath started!

FableForge's picture
Horror Comedy!

Like the photo? Its Horror-Comedy :)

I'm VERY pleased to inform you that we have 11 scripts, all of them -excellent-, for round 1 of VOAT.

This means 10 people will be on the DVD and get a percentage of whatever profits whenever. More importantly (for the time being) it means we get to vote on who wins!

I've given this a lot of thought. I ruled out SUBLIM-style counting of stars, because it doesn't feel too fair to count the number of votes regardless of their content. I also ruled out a simple poll because a script with 2 votes could win if the other 9 just get 1 vote: no consensus. This would be fixed by a series of run-off polls, but even then we have no warranty that the winner is something the directors can actually shoot: we just know that they liked it.

So, instead of all that, here's how its going to go down:

As a director, reply to this message and list the scripts you would be willing and able to shoot by May 15th (the order of your list doesn't matter much at this point).

The script with the most directors vouching to shoot it wins!

Simple, eh?

If there is a tie by Saturday Midnight, then we'll do a poll on Sunday.

I think this solves all issues.

Vote fast, please! I wish to make next KarmaCritic Radio an interview with whoever wins! Hurry up and read the latest two scripts by Cici and Brendan that just arrived yesterday, and then make an informed choice, and again: reply to this post listing the scripts you'd be willing to shoot.

Again, whichever script has the most directors attached wins! Voting ends Saturday!

I'll consider 7 or more directors agreeing on a script to be a VOAT success!

If Sunday comes and no script has more than seven directors attached to it... we'll have to sadly re-evaluate our standing...

My votes!

In no particular order, as a director, I'm willing and able to make an animation entry with any of the following scripts:

When films complete?

When do the films have to be completed by?

Originally, 2 months

But given that we ran long with phase 1, I think it would be fair to give one extra month to filmmakers, and aim for May 15th! Does it sound reasonable?

Question

how many directors are interested?

I would like to participate but I am really really worried if I made the decision to say to you that I am In and I have not the short movie at time, I am working really hard in two projects and I think that I could do that too, but if there are more than ten directors interested,if finally I fail, I will know that your DVD still will works

otherwise if you got more than ten directors then everything is a question of voting for the best movies to include into the DVD

FableForge's picture

Jump in!

This is the latest list of directors who showed interest last time we checked, over at: http://www.karmacritic.com/node/2215

  1. Victor Peceno
  2. DXarach (I made you into a separate entry my friend, we need
entries, if we have other contestants maybe you could team with Victor
    again)
  3. MelioraEric
  4. EvilDirector
  5. Davonie
  6. OuchMouth
  7. Seriousdog
  8. Marco
  9. Brendan Morrisey
  10. Others still not confirmed (specifically I mean Steven and EternalSkyChaz, who just showed interest, but havent said they're in).

I understand your concern my friend, but dont worry: the final goal is to produce a DVD, the actual deadline is not as important, we're doing this together, so we can wait for one another if it makes a better product :) In other words, if you are not yet done by May 15th, most likely we would simply move the deadline to April... what matters is that we end up with a good compilation.

veenotph's picture

Do you mean May or March?

Do you mean May 15 or March 15?

If March, I'm out. New child due in Feb, and that's the end of me until April.

I am IN

I would like to let it really clear it is very important for me

I love all the script, I mean ALL

I don´t want you to think that I am talking just for talk

I use to try to be honest, there is no a script in this contest that is bad in anyway

it is just what I think, I have no problem about saying "sorry I don´t like your script" believe me,

but it is amazing the talent here at karma, it is just my opinion, it is very hard to select I can´t flirt with many script becouse I am really busy, then I have to make a choice and I have to try to made a short list, just becouse when a story is in my mind I start to work even when anything it is still working, I hope all my friends here will understand me, saying thanks to all the writers for their real talent

I am allowed to direct

1- Getting a head in the movie biz

2- Camp Machete

cpparker's picture

Count Me In Too!

I have to read the two new ones first then I'll post my picks.

cpparker's picture

After reading lot of them,

After reading lot of them, and be amazed of the quality of the scripts, I had to decide, first by "what's my next project mood", second what logistics can I afford, and third, what's is the scariest /funniest potential movie here, and the winners are:

Camp Machete

House of the Smoking Guns

I have some amazing locations for this films, and will love them to be my next projects.

I have read some other great Movies here, but I'm not able to make them honnor with the time/logistics I have, so that's 50% of my decission.

Good luck to all of you.. BRAVE PIRATES OF KARMA!! :)

FableForge's picture

Votes please! :)

ED, OuchMouth, SeriousDog, Davonie, Eric and Brendan, please vote today if you can, today is the last day!

[teering on the edge of nervousness :) ]

OuchMouth's picture

I still have to read the

I still have to read the last couple....I'll be sure to do so before the day's up, though.

FableForge's picture

Awesome, my thanks good sir!

I very thankee!

General message to all participants: If we dont have a clear winner today (either someone with 7 directors, or someone with, I dunno, 3 or 4 votes of distance from second place) we'll have to do a runoff....... think of how much fun people had in Iowa some days ago! We want some! :)

cpparker's picture

Or we could just do two movies?

Let the directors pick one of the two to shoot. And I'm not just saying that 'cause you and I are tied so far. ;-)

FableForge's picture

Three-way tie by my count!

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but as of OuchMouth's vote (which is the latest as I type this) we have a three way tie, with four votes: "Getting A Head In The Business", "Camp Machete" and "Helion". Then for second place, with three votes each, we also have a three way tie: "Rudolf", "NimphoNinja98", and "Cuttling Lose".

I'll give it one more night, then tomorrow morning we shall do a runoff! And at the radio show tomorrow, could you call in? And OuchMouth, could you call in? Reason I ask is that I plan to read the finalist scripts in the air! It should be fun! :)

cpparker's picture

I stand corrected

It's a three way! How exciting! Yeah I can call in. What time EST? That is if I'm still in the running by then. ;-)

FableForge's picture

7 PM Eastern!

It'll be fun!

I'll try my best Orson Welles to read the script's description and action lines, and we'll assign characters to whichever guest callers we have. Nyehehehehe! :) If we're -really- lucky, but I think it would be too much to ask, we might even have Dan doing effects and music with his synthetizer :)

Good thing its horror-comedy, we're bound to hit one or the other on the air :)

cpparker's picture

Sounds like too much fun!

I hope I don't forget! I'll try to get my FX guy Bill to call in. He could play Bill? Hey what's the number?

FableForge's picture

Bill playing Bill!!

We cant miss that! The phone number is (347) 215-8713. We'll have the first 10 or so minutes with EvilDirector's karmacritique of the movie "Shoot'em up", and then we'll move right in to the script readin' :)

cpparker's picture

Great!

Hey my friend Bill is looking at a house to buy and of course his first thought was which one could we shoot some cool stuff in. He found one with a great basement and said it would be perfect for Rudolf. Funny how making movies permeates every part of our lives. I bought mine thinking the woods behind it would be perfect for some zombie scenes. Which it was of course!

FableForge's picture

I already like him!

Dont tell "Camp Machete", but between the two of them, "Rudolf" is my favorite :) Camp Machete is fun for the whole family, Rudolf is for twisted souls such myself :) I'll be sure to thank him tomorrow on the air for having such great foresight and good taste! :)

Hehe, I bet the real estate agent would be surprised to hear you go "oh look, and the wooded area! I can already see the living dead ambling about!" or Bill go "oh, and check it out, we can put the chain wristslocks on -this- wall here". Heheh

OuchMouth's picture

So 4 pm Western??  I MAy

So 4 pm Western??  I MAy just be able to make it.  I'll definately call in if I can.

MelioraEric's picture

My Votes

I read all 11 scripts...

First place: Cutting Loose by Darryl Callcott (SunnyDayJazz)

Second place: Camp Machete by Marco Leon (FableForge)

Third place: Hellion by Cameron Harrison (OuchMouth)

And, I would want to reserve the right to lightly tweak some elements, which I think fits the "variation" element anyway.

sunnydayjazz's picture

thanks :)

Just wanted to say I feel honoured that you choose "Cutting Loose" as your favourite, and by all means, should it be the winner, I'm cool with you tweaking it (since when have writers had the final cut anyway, hehehe).

FableForge's picture

Runner ups!

Well, Cutting Lose and NimphoNinja98 are one vote shy of making it a 5-way or 6-way tie. At this point we need more directors! lol!

But man, congrats, Cutting Lose was smart, and I dont know how you managed to cram so much in it (drama, romance, comedy, .. everything) in so few pages and it worked!

sunnydayjazz's picture

Is it too late to add

Is it too late to add myself to the list of possible directors and vote?

FableForge's picture

Yes and No :)

Wel, check out this post:

http://www.karmacritic.com/node/2504

If people agree to that, then for Cutting Lose to get made you'd need to find another director with whom to compete with. That way we'd have 5 scripts and 10 films, all in pairs which seems to be the new trend. Incidentally, if you were to find another director to vote for CL, then CL would actually break the 5-way tie and be the winner, not that it matters as much now, but fun to point out :)

sunnydayjazz's picture

teaser

Well, whether or not the CL script makes it into the competition, I'm still pretty eager to make it myself. We've already got a teaser trailer online...

FableForge's picture

Amazing!

Man, I wish we could include it in the DVD!

Best case scenario would be for someone else to shoot this too, so that all five films could be in pairs, and so that you could tie all other winning scripts in number of votes, and then its in. But even as a onesie, I'll love to see this get made!

I love your attitude!

OuchMouth's picture

Here's my choices

Okay, so I'd give any of the scripts a shot, but here's my choices based on feasibility and my own personal liking of the script

Hellion (naturally!)

Cutting Loose

Honor Thy Father

Rudolf

NymphoNinja98

cici's picture

What If....

Just throwing this idea out there to see what y'all think:

What if we used the top three scripts and made three versions each?  That way, the audience would enjoy the whole "Variations on a Theme" thing, but without the possible exhaustion factor of having to watch the same script ten times over??
Hah?  Hah??
cpparker's picture

I think it's a good idea...

We just have to convince Marco of that!

Brendan Morrisey's picture

Very good idea.

Very good idea.

Brendan Morrisey's picture

Rudolf is the only one I

Rudolf is the only one I can see myself getting done in time for the deadline. But to be honest, there are a couple scripts I haven't read.

FableForge's picture

Why thank you Brendan!

Now we have a 4-way tie! :)
