FOX tries to censor wikipediaIn my best Steve Irwin voice: "ooh boy, its pissed off now!" (May the Crocodile Hunter rest in peace, btw, what a great man he was.) And on the polar opposite, I found today that someone edited Wikipedia again, and removed all the information negative about On The Lot, including the links to KarmaCritic. That someone of course, did not register in wikipedia, so wikipedia recorded its IP address: 216.205.224.64 Now, like any slouching, cheeto-stained, faygo-sipping Gen-Y geek who can do this in his sleep, I looked up that IP address. Guess what came up? Thats right boys and girls. Big Papa Bear:
Hey, look sharp peoples! The Eye of Sauron is upon us! 4:35 PM ET Update: Having learned that a bare IP is not the most anonymous way to post in the interwebs, Mr. Jeff King wisely switched to his myspace alias, "Jeffkingla", and edited Wikipedia again, replacing the offending content with
Like Jon Stewart would say: "[clap, clap] Well Done, Sir!". Boys and girls, meet Jeff King:
Now dont anybody say myspace aint good for nothin' anymo' :) Update 5/19 5:55 PM Jeff King is at it again. The man works on saturdays! Commendable. And he had no misspellings this time. Update 6:04 PM I spoke too soon about the no misspellings. Submitted by FableForge on May 16, 2007 - 2:51pm. |

hurray for faygo drinkers and cheeto eaters...
Man Marco...I'm impressed with your computer/internet skills.
Your discovery makes my stomach hurt and my spine shiver.
When I was a kid, all the fear filled futuristic novels about tyranny and human oppression focused on the government....think Orwell's "Animal Farm", Huxley's "Brave New World", and the little known, but equally chilling, "We" by Yevgeny Zamyatin (originally written in the Soviet Union and banned by the Soviet government...sound familiar). There are many such novels...
But in my opinion, corporations are becoming scarier than the government.
Oh it wasnt me!
Thats the beauty of wikipedia. Like I said in that other post about the Thermopylae, them's be the greeks, those wikipedians. No one can censor wikipedia. Not even the Church of Scientology, and believe me, they've tried hard. The more they fight it, the worse off they're gonna be. In fact, it may turn counterproductive. We'll see :)
Oh, and Dawn, thank you... I'm blushing that you admire this... but there is really nothing to it, every person has an IP number, and its easy to look them up.. this is why its not quite so anonymous to edit wikipedia without an account... but FOX is the Old Guard.. they wouldnt know about that, until today at least...
And in that respect I agree too with what you say about Corporations becoming Big Brotherish. ... remember when Southpark made an episode on the Church of Scientology? Well, the rumor goes that Tom Cruise (the "Jesus" figure in the Church of Scientology) used his influence to force Viacom to force Comedy Central to drop the episode (both Comedy Central and Paramount are Viacom properties). And dropped it was... for a while. But when people heard about it, the outrage was such that the episode was quickly reinstated. And then we know what happened to Cruise and Paramount after MI3 flopped...... The Old Guard needs to learn new tricks. Its harder and harder to consolidate power, at least the old fashion way. I for one, welcome the new world :)
The Vice President / General Manager of FOX Branded Media
... says his piece. See update above.
Popcorn, anyone?
Outfoxed
Oh, man, you've really got them scrambling! That discovery is almost too good to be true.
I can feel a good conspiracy movie coming on. Ladies and gentlemen, load your cameras...
reincarnut, if we smothered that elephant in some manchurian..
...sauce, it could be right tasty. NOT!
Well, Well, they couldn't come up with anything better than the old "disgruntled" filmmaker trick.
Hmmmmm....
But, seriously Marco I am so glad I'm on your team.(you geek) They have no idea, what they have done and who they have tried to do it to.
I managed to copy a post of John's during my scavenging over there...I think I'll post it now.
Like a Stallion...
Lets digg in!
I was as surprised as you are, Dave!
And I'm with you, Stallion and Jackie!! Completely, you guys make the magic!
And now... there's a little more you can do:
http://digg.com/television/FOX_embar...
Anyone has an account in digg? Pass the word, we have some hours to get enough votes, then this goes to the front page :)
P.S. Dont make multiple accounts to vote... digg.com detects that kind of thing and they dont like it. Plus, its not in our philosophy anyway :)
Holy shit...
dats scary... I mean... you can actually track people down like dat?
I didn't make it...Oh God! Thank you Jeff King. You are a ...
... much better man than Steven Spielberg and Mark Burnett.
"Angry filmmakers who did not make the competition are making false claims as witnessed in some of these entries below. I have tried to delete them. Offical info can be found at (end)
This is the first time that I have heard that I didn't make it. How would I have known? Thank you Jeff baby! (do you feel the drip of sarcasm?)
I digress...
31 years ago my mother and my older sister filed a lawsuit against me, spouting "unfit mother". The judge put a "young punk social" worker in my home to see exactly how I was raising my child. Needless to say my mother and I were at odds. We had many many heated discussions over that period of time. Until one day my "young punk social worker" gave me the "good news" (his words)...
"Now that Mrs. King is dead the case is closed. Your worries are over."
And that my friends is how I learned of my mother's death. Kinda like Jeff King's "Angry filmmakers who did not make the competition..."
Like a Stallion...
holy scheisse
marco, is there any way you can get the media to know that FOX is doing this?
Mike, I would love to!
I'd love to, but while I'm okay when it comes to copy pasting IP addresses into IP sniffing tools, when it comes to contacting the media I'm a complete ignoramus. Where do I go? Any idea of where to start? I would like to see this in ET for instance, lol :)
The old "disgruntled filmmaker" spin.
Presentation is so important, because most corporations hire "spin doctors" to handle their press.
I am involved in a protest that has been on going for over twenty years. I've only been invovled for 9 of those years. They have a talent for making you look like an idiot in the press...we really have to be cautious.
I think that a cheaper way (if you will) would be for each of us to reach out to the trouble-shooters in our cities...let them know what's going on with OTL, and also let them know that we have contacted their "colleagues"...and then let the fan whirl. (ie, let the reporters fight over the story).
Aaaaah, Cici...Somebody find Cici and get her butt on this site. She'll tell us what to do. Yeah baby!

Jeff King is at it again. He works on Saturdays....
Updated post above, with yet another attempt to censor wikipedia. I dont blame him for trying though.
Jackie, that sounds like a plan! I've never done it before.... I guess there's only one way to find out, eh? Btw, he really looks silly in wikipedia, I dont know how FOX could turn that around....
Fox Gangsta
That was no misspelling. That was a calculated pitch toward the urban gangsta audience. Jeff meant "affiliatin" as in:
"We ain't affiliatin' wit nobody, sucka"
Fox be down wit dem badass mofos! Unlike us.
