This past weekend we shot our movie for VOAT Getting a Head in the Movie Biz. I'm editing it together now but I thought you guys might enjoy seeing some of the outtakes.

dvd Bonus Material

I'll check this out later since I'm at home right now on the ol' dial up, but I wanted to say:

do include this with your material, when I go to compile and create the dvd. We want as much Bonus Material as I can cram in to the dvd.

AWESOME!

I see the VOAT DVD becoming more real with every post from you and steven.

I LOVED the shot of the head-in-the-box!

and hey, that whole section with the PA firing everyone? I LOVED IT! you should seriously splice that on its own little clip and let it fly in youtube, I think it has legs of its own!

All in all, you guys had a lot of fun (the office chair races bring so many fond memories) and I'm just proud you're part of this site, and this effort, and.... well, what a week its been. So many karmapirates proving the ACTA NON VERBA credo.

You guys rule, its all I can say.

How will that work?

Is the DVD still going to happen?

Thanks!

You know some of the best lines are the ones not in the script. The
people I work with are great. Especially since none of them are
professional actors! So are you and I the only ones working on movies
for VOAT?

veenotph's picture

don't know

I think Marco is animating Rudolph.

I'll try to get my Zombie to say "I'll party favor you" Did I mention the time he started to direct?

Well that's good

It would be a pretty boring DVD with just two movies on it! Although I'm sure both our movies i will be excellent! Yes, I read about that! Kids are fun aren't they? You should have seen the group I had a few weekends ago.

DVD??? YES, there will be a DVD. :)

Yes, there will be a DVD....and yes, I'm still planning to have Camp Machete, which dxrach from Spain is also working on.

Things like outtakes, behind the scenes...anything like that would be nice to have on the DVD too...so please...anyone who has extra stuff to include, please do, if you wish. When everyone is done... I'll post instructions for how to get "best-quality" to me so that I can make the DVDs.

I'm thinking this will easily be a 2-disc set. I think Marco also suggested putting the scripts from all the films, as PDFs on the DVD. If not, just the ones that were made. The final MASTERS will be Duel-layer discs (1-side), so I'll be able to fit about 8.5GB on a disc.

And, I want to include some sort of promo for KarmaCritic, that tells people about the site, what we do, what we've done, and why we exist. Basically, it'll be a "super" version of our previous manifesto video.

cpparker's picture

Just curious

What your marketing plan is on this. Who are you targeting and how? Do you need any help? I"ve worked a few years in advertising.

REALITY CHECK

There is no market for a collection of short films. The only people that have been succesful at this is TROMA.

If I'm wrong, go to any store, go to the DVD section, and count how many DVD's are on sale that are a collection of short films. If there is one, buy it, then slap me in the face with it. haha

I'm gonna stick to my guns now re: what I said on the last radio show. I'm gonna be real and not sugar coat anything anymore.

Nobody is gonna buy this DVD.

Shorts are festival pieces or parts of a demo reel. that's it.

Maybe

If you go into the store and it is not on the shelf maybe someone bought it already ;)

I don't think the filmmakers here expect to make money from this, you are preaching to the choir.

At least they will have a DVD to prove they made something though.

cpparker's picture

Agreed

Which is why I was wondering how we would market this. Shorts do however do well on the web. Since we do Karma Radio, maybe we could do Karma TV? So far we've all been posting our stuff on You Tube, Revver etc. Is it feasible to have our own space to post and promote our movies shorts and otherwise.

John Meredith's picture

There are site/servers that allow more content sharing...

http://www.ning.com/

...beyond what we have here (posting videos/music).

I voiced my opinion on the problems with the VOAT dvd early on, and the fact that no one would buy it is the least of the problems.

Just not a well thought out endeavor.

I tried to warn all of you about this, but no one listened.

veenotph's picture

Nobody Listened

Name of a great documentary concerning Cuba.

I for one had little expectation of a DVD collection of variations on a theme being made. Scripts yes, but as far as movies being made. Well I was doubtful of my making a film.

However even though I didn't believe that the DVD would be made, or what market there would be for it, I found enough in the project to make it worth my while. I do it for my reasons if you will.

I certainly saw many of the issues, but one can be a naysayer, and look for why everything will fail, or one can jump in and get what one can out if it. For me it was an opportunity to direct a script I hadn't written, to get my feet wet in the horror Genre (as I write a feature length script.), and keep practicing my craft. As long as my motives and actions aren't detrimental to the group effort, then I'm here for why I'm here. Sort of like the drama of going to war, "I'm just here to blow things up, I don't care who is right or wrong"  :-)

So in spite of the long odds against a "succesful" project, several films that would not otherwise have been made are being made, which in the end is really what Karmacritic is all about I think.

Congrats with Lure, I hope it is succesful for you.

Thanks Steven

First of all, I am done with Lure.

I wanted to make a short to submit to festivals to see if it would get in. I made it, it got in, goal accomplished. Did not realize I would cross the goal line so fast but I did.

As for the DVD. Its one thing to make short, its another to make a product for the market.

Once you go to market, the rules change. There are people that make a living waiting for others to blow it in the market place.

If you don't do it right, it could end up costing you money.

Congrats on Hellion. I am looking forward to seeing the end result, looks like you are doing a good job with it.

veenotph's picture

Not to throw a monkey wrench

Not that I want to change things, and having the film distributed on a DVD was always the plan - even though it may affect festival eligibility, and it will cost me money as I have to pay my SAG actress (it's okay.)

It just seems that 3 or 4 films even with bonus material is going to be thin for a DVD. It also seems like the VOAT theme is lost with only one version of each film.

Might make sense to open up the idea to include more footage, or films related to the people who are part of Karma.

Just a thought

Right

I hadn't thought about the festival thing. I definitely want to put mine in some festivals. Something to think about I guess.

Good points.

I thought about that too. It all depends on whether we get all the films we said we'd make. If yes, we may still stick to the plan, two versions of Hellion, two versions of Getting A Head, etc etc. If no, we might just change gears and make it the KarmaCritic DVD, and throw in House of the Smoking Guns, sunndayjazz's Grim Reaper tale, heck, I'd pitch in Camera Guy too, besides Rudolf.

The thing is, for a DVD to be commercially attractive, it needs to have at least 8 shorts. At least.

Hmm.

It all depends on whether we're making second versions of these films or not. I'll make a post and ask directly...

I'm just reluctant to changing the rules in the middle of the game, but I guess we'll do what it takes to have a DVD in the end... lets see...

Swimming up stream

Ahhh, don't change the rules in the middle, change them at the end, when the dust has cleared.
