VOAT probable Game Changer: How are we doing?

FableForge's picture
Woops!

Hey people!

Well, the original plan was as follows (names in no particular order):

CAMP MACHETE: Dxarach and MelioraEric

HELLION: OuchMouth and Veenotph

GETTING A HEAD IN THE BUSINESS: Cpparker and VictorPeceno

RUDOLF: BrendanMorrisey and moi.

Now, you noticed I bolded some names up there, those are the people that I know are working to make the film a reality. It doesnt mean the ones not underlined arent, it just means I havent seen blog posts about it, or the like.

So we have two choices at this point:

Choice A: Do we continue with the original plan, and count on the movies not currently bolded getting made, then release the DVD with 4 pairs of shorts?

Choice B: Or, do we throw away the "variations on a theme" idea, and simply make "The KarmaCritic DVD 2008", and throw other shorts in there, maybe HOUSE OF SMOKING GUNS, UNWRITTEN LAW (I and II), LAND OF THE WITCHES, CUTTING LOOSE, CAMERA GUY, SOUVERNIR, THE CALL, etc?

Pros of choice A is well, its the plan!

Pros of choice B is that it seems more "doable", though I could be wrong.

Another major difference: if we go with choice B, we basically chuck away the contest angle and just split profits equitatively per script/short.

I dont think one option would inherently have more sales than another, its just in how we market it. (OR, if option B has a shitload of shorts, then that may be more attractive to potential customers. Maybe). It also brings new problems: how do we determine if a short is good enough to make it into the DVD?

What do you think people?

I'd like to hear from Steve and Christine, since they have put effort in doing their part, and I feel queasy throwing a game-changer at you guys, it doesnt feel fair; and yet on the other hand, it feels even more unfair to not have a DVD at all, or one that has just four shorts in it.

And I'd like to hear from OuchMouth, Brendan, Peceno, and Dxarach, because if you guys tell us we'll definitely have the original VOAT assignment from you, then we don't need a game-changer after all and we just continue with option A.

So lets chat people, our ultimate goal is to get a DVD out there and make some money :)

If you give me till the Fall, I should hopefully have both those movies 100% done.

Another idea, is maybe if we

Another idea, is maybe if we end up having less VOAT films than originally planned, you could always include the other films on Karmacritic on the DVD together with the VOAT films. All of them would make for a nice collection.

Pros & Cons

You've definitely got hundreds of films here that could go in a KarmaCritic 2008 dvd. And, to some level, I think EZ is right. The only "shorts" compilation I've seen for sale is a Pixar dvd.

However, if that dvd has an angle, like we have with VOAT, then we have a marketable product, as it is an experiment of sorts.

I definitely like Plan B better, but am still working as though we were operating under plan A. Plus, with plan B, I think we could market KarmaCritic better, but we eliminate any Mass Marketing opportunities, as we become a specialty item. It's still doable, but as cpparker mentioned, she has some advertising experience. I also like the idea of a KarmaCritic 2008 dvd because we can naturally fit in a more up to date Manifesto, promote the radio show, talk about what we did with SUBLIM, get an interview with BigSugar...it doesn't have to be just the shorts. This can be like a big demo reel / "press junket" for KarmaCritic.

And even if we still follow Plan A, that doesn't mean we can't also make Plan B in to a product.

But for VOAT content (If we go the Plan A route), I was thinking about the following:

Disc 1 - VOAT Anthology

- All 8 films

- All 8 films' audio commentaries (I still need to look in to how to accomplish this as separate language tracks for the software I have.)
__________________________________________________________

Disc 2 - Special Features

- Special segment documentary on our ideas about Auteurism and how it applies to VOAT. Anyone can participate in this. I can edit this (15-30 minutes).

- PDF versions of the top 5 scripts.

- The KarmaCritic Manifesto II - To share with viewers about KarmaCritic's philosophy and the various stuff we've done - SUBLIM, VOAT, KC Radio, etc. Anyone can participate in this. I will edit this (10 - 15 minutes).

- Behind the Scenes for each film, if available (5 mins each)*

- Bloopers for each film, if available (3-5 mins each)*

- Video bios on all 8 Directors. The 4 writers combine with their director bio. (3-5 mins each). Don't use any graphics. I'll clip all bios together in to one piece, with lower-third graphics giving names and name of the film that is used in the project.

* Each Director/Writer edits items with an asterek, themselves.

I've seen a few short film

I've seen a few short film compiliations here and there before in the past. Its just obvious that they're not extactly big sellers compared to say.... Feature length films.

cpparker's picture

I'm still worried

about how we are going to market this DVD. I think it would be great for the members of Karma to be able to have the DVD but I'm not sure how profitable it would be given the cost of creating the DVDs. I never really intended to make any money off of this. It was just something fun to do and something I could potentially take to festivals and possibly turn into a feature-length movie.

I'll be happy with what ever you guys decide. I know we are deviating from the original plan but sometimes you have to learn as you go. I just don't want you to get stuck with a crap load of DVDs that won't sell.

MelioraEric's picture

I have a few thoughts, but would love your input!

That would depend on going with plan A or plan B. However, I want to stay away from replication / self-distribution as much as possible. Unless we have to go that route, I have a couple ideas to try first. With your background in advertising, I think your ideas would be a tremendous asset to this, especially with having distribution already with a couple projects, like fistful of brains. Marco is helping too!!

I also apologize for the lack of capitalization on any sentence beginning with f or d. Those keys don't work on my laptop keyboard. grrr....and I'm having to copy and paste those letters each time I need them, from either another website, or anywhere I can get a reference to them...and it's even more annoying how often they alternate in consecutive words within a sentence. haha. But yeah, it takes me longer to type messages on my laptop now.

THERE IS NO MARKET FOR THIS DVD

If it had a them like CREEPSHOW then maybe. if a deal is striked then cool. But I don't get it. But RUM IT!

It's a giveaway

Here's the the thing - oh by the way, Wrapped Principle photog on Hellion Last night. Came home, fell asleep, forgot to put out the trash and recycling, wife is putting me on the street tonight, etc. etc.

Here is the thing. DISTRIBUTION. A difficult situation at best. For me, it means once it goes forward, I must PAY and actress through SAG. OKAY, that is fine. Understand that, and I'm fine with it. What is the niche of course? Who is buying the DVD? Who has heard of Karma outside of Karma? Well the zombies mom is actually fascinated with the contest and wants to know if it is still happening. I'm going to make my own DVD of the movie and distribute it to cast members, and have a few cast/crew screenings. Also send it to festivals. Now the question is, what happens if the film is at a festival, and someone wants to disctribute it? What if they want an exclusive to distribute it? If this is before the Karma DVD is released, what do I say. - Yeah sure of course I am dreaming here, but hey, perhaps a Zombie film wants a companion short for its DVD release?

So I think somewhere there has to be a marketing plan generated, which seems so far to not have been clearly figured out, or now needs to be changed.

I actually think that hoping for sales to members outside of Karma is not going to happen, happy if I'm wrong, but we still have to market it. A choice may be distribution by Netflix - a Horror shorts Anthology DVD may just sell/rent. Neophyte filmmakers may also find it interesting - so there may be a market there. Not sure, someone would have to check with Netflix.

Other than that, publicity at festivals (Big or mor likely the micro festivals), that might raise awareness of Karma the community. Give aways, or prizes. Then again that will incur costs, and show no chance of a R.O.I. (who wold pay for it anyway?)

Distributing through Karma - that would require I think a whole re-think of Karma's concept.

to Voat or not to Voat

Thanks for the consideration.

I have no opinion one way or the other.

I doubt I would "win" any way, but still forward on either leg, or stump.  One could wait until May 15th, and then choose. I'm for either and among dentists expressing a preference - ehhhh.

In either case, it will be nice to say Hellion has received distribution.

Hawk it at film festivals, and conventions. Better yet, get Sony or Panasonic to include it with a purchase of one of their video cameras. :-)

I still have to send Cameron a release to sign, and you will have to send me one. Can't be exclusive though, got to be able to send this out to festivals.

Well, seeing veenotph

Well, seeing veenotph posthis stuff idd get me kinda amped to make my version, I doubt I could pull it together by May 15.  Should we extend the deadline (I don't know if that's an option or not), it could very well get done.

FableForge's picture

Question!

OuchMouth, I totally get that with a little more time you could get Hellion done (and yes, extending the deadline most definitely is an option on the table) but question:

If you had more time, would you rather do Hellion, or something else?

In other words, would you prefer Option A or B, above?

OuchMouth's picture

I dunno, I like Option A.

I dunno, I like Option A.  I think it's more interesting and bankable than just some random shorts done by a bunch of people who visit the same website.  Yes, yes, I know it's more than that...but will consumers look at it that way?  I still enjoy the educational value of option A.

victorpeceno's picture

The most important

is that there is a Plan B

I have in mind to do my short film but I have told with david

and we need more time probably until september perhaps early but not too sure

of course The house of the smoking Guns is definitely ready for dvd on time

the idea from Eric is perfect, if we have all the voats entries ready for an extended dead line

that will be great, and we could get a two disc dvd series from karma, voat and selection,

but always we could do a selection from the shorts alredy uploads at karma if voat have a big delay

Think that Plan B is a cool

Think that Plan B is a cool plan... but I don't surrender about the plan A to be made...

I'm dying to make Camp Machete, and I already have the location, and all the stuff, only need the actors, and it will be ready to go...

Anyway, Victor an I are a FUCKING team, and I will not let him alone doing the short, and I, and we all know he can do it alone great, but if we are in the ship, we are in the ship together, until it sunks...

Said that, it seems Impossible for me to make the two shorts in the time between today and last days of May, because, I have made a promise to my girl, who have suffered me, and who have worked her ass pretty bad doing as an "emergency" producer of my feature film last summer... and making an AMAZING work, dealing with companies, catering, props, actors, serving as prod. driver... Her first time in this, and she produced a feature... incredible... And nowadays, I have saw her in the last months, only at weekends..

Well, the thing is that I promised her a normal summer, and although she it's not going to blame me any for be working, I want to give her the time he trully deserves, and I'm going to give it to her... Being a director is my dream, but In front of this I want somebody I can share my dreams with (in the bed, if possible, haha)...

So said that, my possibilities are, if a really late deadline is not possible (talking about Winter '08) to stay on Plan B, and if the deadline if possible... I'm GONNA MAKE THAT FUCxxNG movies!!! :D

Some thoughts so far

I do think we have a slight chance to sell DVDs even if they have nothing but shorts in'em. You just have to find a theme.

For instance, NIGHT GALLERY, by my hero Rod Serling, (also where Spielberg got a big break directing Joan Crawford) was three short stories. Or CREEPSHOW. Or a TALES FROM THE CRYPT compilation. Yes, yes, those are big budgets, Rod Serling, Spielberg (Stephen King played some hick doofus in CREEPSHOW) and Joan Crawford, I get it. But my point is that while lacking budget and stars is probably a problem, selling a DVD with nothing but shorts is not as much. It can be sold.

Maybe, we should take a page from CREEPSHOW and use a theme for this DVD, something about Horror-Comedy, then fill it with shorts in that genre? Maybe we could have some sort of CRYPT KEEPER or ELVIRA introducing the shorts one after another, you know what I mean?

All this is worth waiting for. If we have to move the deadline to get more high quality shorts and create a "KarmaCreeper 2008"... I think its worth it. We just have to figure out how to determine which shorts are good enough to make the DVD, and then the whole manufacturing distribution side of things. You know, details :)

Them's be me-thoughts so far.

He might be up for it but he's probably not for free.

cpparker's picture

I can understand

That people have other commitments and can't make the deadline but I personally have been busting my ass making my movie Fistful of Brains now for over a year, have a 9-5 job and am a single mom and I've found the time to make a short in time for the deadline. Why? Because I said I would and when I give my word that I'm going to do something I darn well do it! Let's just make these movies guys! It's not a chore, it's fun! It's just one week of shooting for god's sakes!

this girl cpparker

nothing to say!!!

dxarach's picture

Yeah Cpparker... I'm not

Yeah Cpparker... I'm not giving any excuses for not making the work, and my word... It's not matter of excuse, for me, it's matter of fact, that I'm not going into new projects passed May, until I finish what I'm going into...

For Example, Victor and I have been working our asses into House of Smoking, cause the opportunity of shoot that knocked at our door, and that was an offer we couldn't reject... Location, props, script, and actors, waiting for us to shoot... Meanwhile we have been trying to find some producers to help us, for the films of VOAT, but this is the third world of moviemaking...

I have no excuses, I have a very strong dream and I work hard, House of Smoking Guns, have been shooted by Victor and Me Only, no productions aid, no techs, no makeup, no SFX guys, and the other films of VOAT will be the same, but shooting that way, requires 10x the time of shooting with a team, so I have to be realistic.

Going into technical issues, the materials to makeup and all that stuff, here in Canary Islands, is like... looking for a Burger King in the surface of the moon... it's really hard to find people/materials to do it... But once again... if I don't find a Prostethic makeup'er, WTF... I will do the prosthetics myself... but that it's once again... more time to sum up.

The main concernfor us, as I have talked to Victor, is... Victor, this year, we can make anything... but if we get into something... it's not OK for us, to make the work, and be happy... we have not to make the work, we MUST MAKE A FUCKING GREAT WORK, in anything we get into.

So I'm not saying I'm not going to make the movie, but I need some more time, hope you understand, but that's the deal for me, sorry if that disturbs any of you, it's not my intention in any way, because I'm so happy of being working with you guys.

sunnydayjazz's picture

my thoughts

I'll cast my vote for Plan B. A dozen original shorts with one binding theme would be fun to watch.
