There are very few moments in which I can be accused, rightly so, of horror movie heresy.  This flick is one of them.

Animating RUDOLF

FableForge's picture
HO HO HO!

Hey people, I just figured I'd share this little image I made for RUDOLF (that sick short I wrote for VOAT, which you can read here, and consequently lose your faith in humanity: http://www.karmacritic.com/node/2450 ) . I'm playing with a really cool software called Toon Boom Studio 4, and it took me all of three hours to kinda learn the basics, which is all I need to create Rudolf. I got all my 3d models and screenshots, and all of the audio, voices, etc... its just a matter of animation now, I hope. Lets see.

Here's a little demo of what this software can do. I'm cautiously optimistic :)

http://www.toonboom.com//products/toonBoomStudio/demo/Demo.html

P.S. Its likely the finished product wont look at all like this image... I'm limited by "cutout style" animation to never change too much the angle of my characters, but we'll see what can I get away with. We'll see :)

P.S.2. Credit where Credit is Due: thanks to Eric for telling me about this software in the first place!

Is that the full program??

I know you said Studio 4, so I'm guessing it's the lighter program. I forget the name of the full blown program. I just remember it being like $5,000.

The Studio stuff's only a few hundred, I believe.  Still, pretty sweet what the software can do, from what I've seen from some other people.

There was a guy in our town who took pictures of people's heads, pasted them on cartoon bodies (Wizard of Oz characters), then as the commercial audio plays, there was some cartoon mouth thingy, that moves in relation to the audio sine waves, creating a simulated conversation.

I've not played with the smaller version, I downloaded the full blown program's trail...and gave up 10 minutes in to it pretty much seemed to require two widescreen ratio monitors to view the full window of the program.

Anyway, it's cool that you like it. I'm glad it's helpful for you.

Its the 500 bucks version

I figured I didnt really have a need for the "Pro" version, according to the Demo, the vanilla version had all I needed and probably a bit more. There's a stripped down version called "Express" for like 150 bucks, but that seemed like a glorified PowerPoint rather :) I'm happy with the one I got. Also, notice cpparker's comment about photoshop below, to which I can only reply from the bottom of my heart:

ARRRR!!

 I played with Toon Boom

I played with Toon Boom Studio for a while last year with my film classes, and they had a ball creating some simple animations.  Personally, i still prefer Poser/Photoshop/AfterEffects in combo, but I remember the kids were really happy with how easy the basics on Toon Boom were.

Good for quickies

Well, this one took me like 20 minutes to make:

It doesnt blow my mind, and actually it looks kinda weird at the joints, but hey, maybe that's what this will be. A weird thing that looks weird at the joints and has a santa hat. We'll see what happens :)

I'm hoping to start my companion piece in July. The thing I'm thinking about the most is how to go about faking the scorpions.

I doubt I'll ever use Photoshop since I discoved...

...Gimp. It's open source (aka: FREE) and it is jsut as extensive as Photoshop. Granted, I've not used Photoshop much, but Gimp is what I played around with for my new avatar. A friend of mine did some, and I picked up the concepts of it quickly. I could do so much with that program -- so why pay for Photoshop, when you can get the same for free?

Isn't Photoshop free?

Hmm, mine was. I guess I'm a better Pirate than you.

hahaha

Nice. ;)

 True, but if you are

True, but if you are using the Adobe products, there is a great ability to move between programs...little shortcuts they provide.

 Actually, a 2-D animation

Actually, a 2-D animation software that I found a lot more intuitive than Toon Boom was Anime Studio Pro, I THINK made by the same folks who made Poser...you should check into it.
