Hellion Teaser 2

veenotph's picture

Here is another teaser for Hellion, this is a prolog. The delightful Elisabeth Carlton was excellent, and really into the idea. Great scream.

IT is just a little rough right now. And yes the title is done like that as an hommage to the cheesey horror films of the1970's

da COLOR...

is killaz.  I dunno if its from YouTube, but its pretty GRAINY... I like dat.

Oh YAh... when she knocking on da door... I dunno if you meant to have it like dat, but da tilt shot and flush division of frame is killaz... woulda been c0o0o0oray-zeh if you had da girl more perpendicular while having dat tilt shot.

It really is all intentional. Lots and lots of takes, and careful "dutching" of the camera.

The look isn't quite there yet, it was rushed, and it is impossible to control how it plays on your computer, but I'm pleased with it on my monitor.

It does represent a problem overall, It can look perfect on my broadcast monitor, but when you put it out for the web, everything changes, and then what if the viewers monitor is wrong?

But I'm glad you like it.

"DUTCHING"

Thats what its called?

I instinctively experimented with "TILT SHOTS" when I first started shooting... in my FILI CROSS piece you can see one of those shots.

Its pretty trippy... when you think you discovered a style or mechanism, while being selfish thinking that its your style, its been NAMED and MASTERED a long time ago.

Makes me reminisce of this story in da 6th grade...

As a kid, I have always wondered why every time I put my hand over my aquarium, no matter if there was food or not, fishes swim to the surface. One day my 6th grade teacher gave us a list of scientific subjects and projects to select for the annual science fair, but for some reason I wanted to submit my own piece. My teacher was totally against it, and I will always remember her saying “why would you want to makeit hard for yourself, why don’t you just pick the volcano project?"  Regardless, I submitted a proposal to do an experiment conditioning aquarium fishes by tapping the aquarium before feeding, and when tapped, fishes swim to the surface. I won 2nd place overall in the science fair and represented at the district science fair.

Years later in High School, I took Psychology and learned about Pavlov's theory, making me realize that I experimented with that "MECHANISM" as a kid... a mechanism that has been NAMED and MASTERED a long time ago.

P.S. this mechanism can be currently observed on a young artist roaming and experimenting with it in San Francisco, where... the same thing happens in his everyday life to a certain extent... he hates certain WAYS WITH SAN FRANCISCO WOMEN and gets depressed whenever he is around similar situations... and also starts to associate it with other things, like his company, the whole city. Eventually "I hate The City" expresses his hatred of doing a particular thing or interacting with particular people, because he has associated other things with it. Whether it is worth addressing all of the associations and working through them or just moving to another City depends on the circumstances... his experiments will end at da end of da summer on August 30th.

hAhA... my bad for ranting... :)

Well Technically

Technically it is called a "Dutch angle.

From what I've heard the term comes from the time when German Directors (fresh from the "German Expressionism movement) came to Hollywood, and started putting the caemra severly off level. A little off level looks bad and like a mistake, a lot off level is better - reference to   Big Sugar and the comment on Ridiculous.

Anyway It came to pass thlat shooting like that was refered to as shooting "Duetch" - short for Duetchland, as in those crazy "Duetch angles" I guess, which eventually became "Dutch"

Don't get me started on M.O.S. - You wouldn't believe the truth.

what about GROUND UP angles...

shots from da ground up?

I discovered that angle simply from not owning a tripod.  Has this shooting angle been coined yet?  If not, Ima name it da hANDSOME shot... hAhA... :)

veenotph's picture

Plano American

Usually I've heard it called "Low Angle", which is low looking up. "High Angle" is Camera High looking down. Some High Angle shots are "Bird's eye view", I like the "Security camera view."

Some Low angle shots are actually acheived using a special prism, with the camera low, pointing toward the floor, and the prixm gets the effective position of the lens lower thanyou could otherwise (unless you ripped out the floor.) Special prism to keep the image orientation correct - Very expensive, but a fun toy.

Yes, I am a camera/tech geek.

My favorite name for a shot is "Plano American", which you only hear from non American directors. It roughly translates into "The American Shot." It developed out of westerns, when the frame size was made to include the actors 6 shooters. Apparently that size of frame was distinct to Westerns.

I like working with foreign (to me) crews. Really makes you think about the language of filming.

Big fan of

The Dutch myself. I probably overuse it quite a bit

Brendan Morrisey's picture

One time I used a dutch

One time I used a dutch angle in a film class project in high school and it was not on purpose either. The camera setup on a tripod was on a street that was a hill pretty weird slanted hill. So while the tripot was set up straight and all, it still slanted and that's how I got the natural dutch. I've never really use it. One thing I do overuse is CU on eyes though.

OuchMouth's picture

You can never overuse the CU

You can never overuse the CU eye shot!!  As long as the actor's eyes are worth a CU, that is.

cpparker's picture

I hear ya!

Compression for the web really dulls out the color quality, I had the same problem with mine. It does look great on DVD though and since that's how people will be seening it we shouldn't be too worried.

OuchMouth's picture

Oooh, neat!  Yes, I got the

Oooh, neat!  Yes, I got the 70's homage with the title, I like it!  Though it should probably be something other than white Times New Roman, but like you said it's only a rough cut.  Can't wait to see more.

veenotph's picture

Font this

I agree about the font, and there is music and sound effects missing. Probably shouldn't put it up, but.

What font would you suggest, cause frankly, I'm not so good at typography.

Cutting the Helen eats dinner with familly scene. Very funny. Very Funny.

Good Job

can´t wait to see more

I think is ok that you upload the movie to let us to see part of the process

it is obvious that it is a rough edition (ring bell) but we got the essence and you will come up with a good one

for the 70´s style font

try Impact or Cracked font

good work!!

Scary

MY wife came down with my two year old daughter to give her a bath.

So we watched a few minutes of Hellion.

My daughter got very scared and screamed and cried, 90 seconds into the movie.

I guess I will not be sending this out to children's festivals.

My wife has also informed me that I am waking up and comforting Sadie everytime she gets up crying tonight.

font suggestion for HELLION

For HELLION, have you considered using the font "Warlock"? You can see and download "Warlock" at http://www.fontspace.com/aaron-w-bec... ... and that site even gives you a space to type in sample text (such as the word "HELLION" or "Hellion") to see how it will look in the font. If you don't like "Warlock," ask me to find and suggest some other fonts that might better fit your idea for the film's look.

veenotph's picture

Not Bad

Not Bad, Not Bad at all.

I'll think about it. $6 seems like a fair price for a font.

Thanks.

Money for fonts?!  Who's

Money for fonts?!  Who's heard of such things in these days and times.  I use dafont.com  Everything's free.  You can just type in a name and it'll pop up a bunch of examples.  "zombie" has a couple good ones.  Off the top of my head I see something dripping blood in spectacular Hammer Horror fashion.  Heck, if you're any good with after effects you can get an animated title that drips blood.  I'm terrible with such programs, so I usually just stick with whatever Final Cut has or I can download from dafont.

Oh, and when you said "cutting the family dinner scene" I thought you meant you were cutting it out and I got a little sad for a moment.  :)  Yeah, it should come across pretty good.  Bad parenting is always funny in movies.

SCREAM IT OUT!

I like that chick. She's hot! haha

Good use of the dutch angle. It isn't too obvious. I'm not a fan of dutch angles, but when they are used cleverly, they work. And in this case, it works.

thanks for sharing your process! Looking forward to seeing it when it's all done!

You mean like the insanely clever use in Battlefield Earth where every single shot in the entire movie is dutch?  Sheer brilliance!!
