THE INTERVIEW IS WITH
The interview will be with the SAN BERNARDINO/INLAND EMPIRE SUN NEWSPAPER. They've been doing write ups on me since I left the university--so they sort of have been following my career since I was 21 yrs. old.
But the race continues! The boys were editing all night. I passed out on the couch, and now it's time for me to continue editing! then the torch gets passed to Punk rock Ryan and then maybe I'll catch some zzzz's while his eyes burn at the screen! the movie privately screens tomorrow at 7 pm!

I'm gonna be fucking famous. I was destined for it. Built for it. And I've worked my ass off for it!
When i was born, my grandmother said a really strange thing. My mother always reminds me of this. when my grandmother first held my little baby ass in her arms (she has passed, I barely remember her, but I love her) she said to my mother in spanish "this boy is either gonna be a very successful doctor, or a famous director of cinema. As it turns out, my father was the one that became a successful doctor and now my destiny will be fullfilled as one of Hollywood's greatests.
How did my grandmother know this? Who thinks of that when you hold a baby? "this fool is gonna be a movie director" How did she know that?
I wish she was still alive to see what I have accomplished and what I'm about to become. **THIS IS FOR YOU GRANDMOTHER!**
And also for my family that have supported me to full extent. And my true friends that have stuck with me since the beginning through the good the bad and the ugly.
We have really fought hard and tough. And the fight isn't over. I still have a few more rounds to go before I become a champion. And I have a good corner watching and supporting.

ezekiel, people that claim they are going to be famous usually don't become famous. trust me, i know. my whole family thought i was going to be the superstar and i claimed everyday that i was going to be famous. meanwhile jerry just remained quiet and did his thing. no one thought he would make it. THEN BOOM. one day he meets larry david, rides his coattails, steals my idea and now he is famous, not me. and i am the one with talent.

I can't wait for you all to see the film. It isn't the greatest indie film of all time...or... could it be, who knows? Did I out do Robert Rodriguez on how to make an indie flick---I think so. But I don't want to say that for sure cause that guy is one of my inspirations and I don't want to dog on him---I just want to be as good as he is.... But it is definitely an Ezequiel film with Ezequiel's signature style.
I'm ready for this. This is what I was born to do. Hollywood has been waiting for a long time for an Ezequiel feature. And so...here it comes!

In my way of thinking, the only person you should think about outdoing is yourself. Never compete with anyone, be them enemies or inspirations. The only person you have to prove anything to is yourself. Do your best for one movie, and outdo your best for the next until your individual evolution as a filmmaker has reached it's final course, which will last till either death or retirement.
El Mariachi will always be El Mariachi while Stormy Night will always be Stormy Night. The standards you set for yourself could one day be the standards everyone else sets for themselves, so let them worry about it. I don't think Rodriguez cares about anyone setting new standards above his, otherwise he wouldn't have shared his personal stories in detail. Like passing out flyers to the brothel in town with the best sex. You get one and end up passing it on to the next person and the next.
So all I can say is rock on. You may outdo Rodriguez, but the day I outdo you is coming like the end of days.

But this is me. Part of what drives me and motivates me is my competative nature. I won't lie, some of my motivation is fueled by revenge. I have old friends that are now enemies that have disrespected me. So I want revenge. I have old girlfriends (from my early 20's) that thought I wasn't going to go anywhere with my career. I want those bitches sitting at the theater watching my films. I want revenge.
I have an aunt that doesn't believe in me. Never has. She believed at one point that I was going to end up on the street. My answer. Yeah. On the walk of fucking fame! haha
And I was raised as a competitor. Being in martial arts since I was 11 yrs. old sort of molded me this way--to kick ass. period. I like competition. This is why I excelled in film/television school, cause I wanted to be better than everyone else. And I was. Still am. I'm the only one working in hollywood besides a few others that rose up the ranks with me.
Rodriguez has his story. I have mine. And mine is very unique and crazy. He broke in at the age of 23. I broke in at 22. Tim Burton at 25.
So I don't ever think about outdoing myself. I want to out do everyone else. And in that process of thought, I end up oudoing myself anyway cause I'm constantly working and thinking.

Ez, I think you and I might
Ez, I think you and I might have the same aunt, and I hardly even know the woman. I met her once at a funeral, and afterwards I've seen her at work and she doesn't ever recognize me. But when my mom told her I wanted to be a filmmaker, she said it was impossible and to not even bother. Apparently my cousin tried filmschool and got the same speech you got from your professor, then gave up and became a lawyer but never even made a film of any kind anyway. So who cares.
Revenge is sweet and I do hope to have revenge on everyone who has seen my interest in movies and filmmaking as a joke or never believed in me, just like you. But what they believe in doesn't really drive me compared to what I believe in.
The two things I do think about when I think about my interest in becoming a good filmmaker: I don't want to make a movie unless it's something I would peronally watch on my own if it wasn't mine. Every time I do something, I always say to myself "I can do better." again and again, and I don't think I'll ever stop saying that. That is what I meanwhen I say "the person I want to outdo the most is myself."
I Love Taxi Driver, it's my favorite movie. But I don't think about making the next Taxi Driver or even outdoing it.
One of my personal heroes John Woo never watches his own movies more than once because eventhough he feels he accomplished something, the flaws he sees always stand out to him no matter what, and I relate. But the dude has made two of the most amazing action movies I have ever seen in my entire life, and I don't think I ever will see a better action film than The Killer or Hard Boiled. And this is a guy that used to be restrained by the studios until he finally found a way to be succesful while maintaining his own individuality. I think he was the first director from Hong Kong to crossover into Hollywood, where he was again restrained later in his career, but now the guy is going back to basics and his next film Red Cliff looks fucking epic to the point that he may finally be Oscar worthy, and perhaps it will be a movie he can watch more than once after all these years of hard fucking work.

WATCHING YOUR OWN MOVIES
Brendan, I love your attitude. I do the same thing. I'll study my film to see what made a certain shot/edit work and ask myself, why did it work, or why didn't it work, or what makes me feel that I could have done better. But that was always only for my short films.
I haven't been able to look at "On A Dark And Stormy Night" that way yet. We are just starting the process for the final cut of the film.
But in watching the rough assembly of it, I discovered something about myself. That I do things that give it that "Ezequiel-esque" feel and that I'm not even aware of it. So then I began to study not only the cut, but study myself and wonder why did I do it that way. I'm a person that is very self aware of who I am as a filmmaker because I ask myself those questions. This is how I learn what I'm capable of.
And stormy night has some sequences in there that look beautiful. Never before seen in an ultra low budget feature. Something with a signature style. the demographic for this picture was aimed at an audience of ages 30 or younger. I hope it is well recieved.
Since all of you are filmmakers, I think you will enjoy it because of this very distinct and unique look. If you don't find the film to be your cup of tea, I think you will still dig it for that reason.
But the one thing I keep hearing from everyone is: that if they saw action figures/dolls of Juan Riedinger's character of Grey, they would buy it. So I believe, that's what I'm most proud of. Juan and I spent two months talking about this character and what he should look like. We couldn't figure it. Until finally it clicked. Juan and I went silent. And right there we both knew that we had created something new. And the idea was a simple one. "Charles Manson meets the Crow". At that point we both saw the image of Grey clearly in our heads and that was it!
So do I love this character. Very much. I can't wait introduce this character to the world.
So when the film is done, I will watch a few times, and that will be it. On to the next!

This is soooo exciting, brother...
I've been popping my head in and out as things have just been swamped these past few days with this dance thing.
Anyway, you know I'm happy for you, EZ, and that I support you...but I'll tell you what. I'd better get an invite to your premiere, or I'm going to have to hit you over the head with one of those plastic hammer things that squeak when it hits something. Imagine the arcade game where the moles pop their heads out of these holes and you have to knock each one back in with that hammer. That's what I'll be doing, if I'm not invited. :-P
By the way, can you tell us all how your screening went??? I've been dying to hear how the audience reacted to your film.
THE PRIVATE SCREENING STORMED THE HOUSE!
It was very well recieved! The investor was really excited about it! Turzman thought it was cool and so did Marlies. So I'm happy that they are happy. Of course right after, Brian (producer) and Scott (investor) sat down with my co-editor Punk Rock Ryan, and they made their notes for the final cut.
I had a friend come over to check it out. She gave me a similar critique on a scene everyone thought was too long. But I like it that way. And that seems to be the only real note.
but as whole, everyone was really entertained and were captivated by Juan's character of Grey and they loved the way the film looks. It has it's own style and it never let's up. I've said this before, and everyone else that saw it said the same thing--it doesn't look like any independent film they have seen thus far. So this friend of mine, gave the film a solid A. And she's very critical. She wouldn't lie. And eventhough Turzman is in it, he wouldn't lie either. And he thought it was cool as fuck!
Punk Rock Ryan is very critical also. And thought it was cool also. And he won't lie either. Before this cut was assembled, he was watching some scenes as I was working, and there were times where he would just nod his head, and sometimes was straight up and told me "that sucks". So since he thought it was cool, I'm excited cause he doesn't lie.
So it was a good night of screening. Especially since the investor really liked it and now wants to make another film!
As for my final thoughts on how I feel about this first assembled cut, or as a movie as a whole. It's sort of like watching a live action cartoon--sort of. My disney influences are more than apparent in this picture, so are my inspirations from my love of comic books. It is undeniably a film by Ezequiel.
If you're a fan of my short films, you're gonna love Ezequiel's first full length motion picture!
