KarmaCritic Illegal Trailers

FableForge's picture
This IS Halloween!

People, I need your feedback on a wild idea I just had.

Its called "KarmaCritic Illegal Trailers".

What it is, is trailers for popular movies made with popular music, neither of which we own. Granted, this is not by far a new idea, or even an ground-shaking idea, but we can nail the implementation and institutionalize it. More after the jump:

So, the concept goes like this: copyright law dictates we may not use materials we don't own for profit, or in a way in which "dillutes" the non-owned brand, where "dillution" means people may look at it and be confused as to whether our product is official or not. The first qualm is easily dismissed, no one makes a dime. The second, we take care of by simply putting our "Illegal Trailers" brand logo at the beginning, that clearly states this is not "official".

I'm not a lawyer, but if those two premises stand, we might be in for some fun before we get the first C&D letter.

So here's how it would work:

Every week we'd start the contest by picking some popular movie. (Oh yeah, we would make this a contest. Pirates are competitive like that). Then each contestant would have a whole week to create a trailer for that movie, using popular music. We put them in youtube all on the same day. One week later, the one with the most views in YouTube wins, honors are earned, cred is gained, and youtubers take notice. The "KarmaCritic Illegal Trailers" brand grows.

Of course, we would have a section here in the site holding all contests and their respective winners, and we'd give special honors to the winners, maybe 100 karma points, etc etc.

You don't really need budget for this, just a good editing software, creativity, editing skills and some time to waste. The potential is some notoriety for yourself and for the site. I wager we'd get some fresh new blood too to join us.

What say you? Anyone interested so far? Is this a good idea?

And keeping with the Tim Burton spirit

Here's a decent sample, featuring the INSANE CLOWN POSSE song, Boogie Woogie Wu, a twisted little thing, and if you want to keep some degree of innocence in your mind, do NOT listen to the lyrics:

Hmm.. Maybe we could do music videos instead of trailers, then? Yeah. I think that's more what I meant. Hmm. Either or? both seem like fun things to spend a saturday doing.

Yeah! That's the idea!!

I remember seeing The Clones Of Bruce Lee, hehe, I saw it again just now. Nice to be able to pick up Bolo Young near the end there.

Anyway, yes, how long did it take you to come up with this trailer? If its something that seems doable in a weekend, I think we'd have a realistic chance of making several contests for the karmabrethren.

I bought a cheap boxset of mostly cheap kung fu movies like this. None of the discs had copyright blocks on them to keep me from ripping it onto my computer. I guess they're a lazy distribution company. It just seemed right to take a movie like clones of bruce lee and add immediate music to a trailer. Done in less than a day. Maybe it was a few hours.

Now it has 43,036 and a 5 and a half star rating. The actual movie itself is total shit.

IT'S GOOD EDITING PRACTICE

If anything, that's what this is really good for. When I was in school, we had to do something similar. Of course, mine was the only A+. haha

But I believe excercises like this make your eye better. And it is good to excercise. It gets you in shape. And will also get your films in shape.

There are so many shitty

There are so many shitty ones on youtube its not even funny. The best fan-made music videos I've ever seen was this Christian Bale one:

I've been editing dance videos together lately, and all I keep thinking is that this might help me one day when I try and make an action movie.

Master Class in Editing

Today, I was feeling melancholy for some reason, so I revisited this:

Just like Rod Serling is my hero for writer, P T Anderson is my hero for director. This intro, these few minutes... is a master fucking class in how to edit. In how to shoot, how to direct actors. I could talk for hours about the composition of every shot, and how he put it together. Its like theather almost, everything choreographed. This is the bar right here. And it introduced me to Aimee Mann, as a bonus.

Steady At The Wheel

The cat forever advocating ICP is an Aimee Mann afficianado?
They say genius is being able to hold two completely opposing thought
in one's head at the same time.  If that ain't fucking evidence of
that, I'll eat my fucking hat.

If it's just ridiculous, it's bad.

IF IT IS RRIIIDDDIICCUUULLOOUUSS, then it's okay.

OR, I could just be crazy. Occam's Razor my friend.

But in this particular case, I think I have an explanation: I like stories. I like music that tells stories, that arouses feelings, that makes me dream up weird shit in my head. ICP does that all the time, every single song is a story, usually "wicked" which is their trademarked word. Aimee Mann has lyrics that make me see stories too.  I think I memorized "One" unintentionally, right after watching Magnolia.

It's just so well placed, at the beginning of the movie. And then PT Anderson did it again, with "Save Me" and "Wise Up".

Just.. the lyrics man... the lyrics. "You look like a perfect fit.... for a girl in need... of a tourniquette". Man. That's genius. :)

Here:

"Save me

from the ranks

of the freaks

who suspect

they could never love anyone...."

Wow.

So, say true, you ever heard of a Canadian band called The Tea Party?

'tis aight

I had not heard of them, nope. So I looked them up in youtube and got this:

Its just alright. I'm not exactly a fan. Its a bit like U2 (that's a compliment) but somehow I didn't feel they were edgy or challenging.. I guess they're too easy to listen to, or maybe it was just that song. Now, if a story had been in there, it would have been like this ("Re-Offender" by Travis):

And that I could definitely listen to that for a long time, even if its basically the same style to my untrained ears. Stories make the difference :)

PIRATE DUELS!

You know what I just thought?

This can be a way to settle disputes around here :)

You know all that pirate talk and stuff about cannons and walking the plank? This could put an actual bite to it. This could be our own unique way of fighting. I could challenge anyone to a "Pirate Duel", which means we'll both publish our Illegal Trailers the same day, and one week later we'll see who got more YouTube views. Haha! Now THAT is a fight. With all the bragging rights, and cheering from the sidelines that is involved in a fight.

Me likey.

Muaha.

Me likey very much.

That's a pirate!!

Ready with the cannons!! Quick to raise the black flag! Thats the spirit I like in you, Captain Peceno!

As for source material, there's two ways that I know, one is to steal other youtube videos. Thats my preferred source, because I'm lazy. To do so, I use this:

http://www.savevideodownload.com/dow...

Method number two is to rip a DVD. For that there's plenty of solutions, one that I used once for a mother's day (she loves ALIAS, the TV series) is DVD Shrink, right here:

http://www.dvdshrink.org/

For music, there's plenty of choices, I use FrostWire, though there's ways to use itunes too, and even the Windows Media Player allows you to rip songs to wmas.

After that, its about the editing software, mine is Adobe Premiere Elements.

I think we'll start the first contest as soon as we have at least 5 contestants! You and I are 1 and 2, we need three more :)

Note for lawyers who will read this 5 months from now when writing a Cease and Desist letter: the term "pirates" so generously used in this website refers to buccaneers of old, seafaring salty dogs who'd brave the seas and the Armada, and had a penchant for booty and rum, often at the same time. KarmaCritic does not condone nor endorse copyright piracy in any form. I use FrostWire, and BitTorrent, as well DVD Shrink and SaveVideoDownload.com only for lawful purposes. There.

Great!

meanwhile I am studying

I hope to get three more pirates to start with that amazing contest

Thanks for share the links

our trailer contest is legal, we are legendary pirates

not pirates in the other meaning of the word..., we want to let it clear

Cannons, fire, wenches and rum!

Guilty Laughter

Man, that's something that I feel really bad that I'm laughing at, but damn its funny!

No, I'll never watch 2 Girls 1 Cup. Never. In the afterlife, I'll have my own VIP section in Hell reserved for the few people who never watched it. But its fun watching reactions of others. Man!

I gave it a shot once. I had to click out of it the second I saw poo. Man, you'd think I out of all people could handle more than 5 seconds of something like that, but apparently even I have limits.
