The Karma Oscars, how it's gonna work  Ahoy!! So finally I think I came up with a process to have our own awards ceremony here in Karma. Surely you've all seen by now the posts by Captain Peceno; I think its a great idea because it symbolizes the faith the community has in itself. Getting an award from any anonymous body of critics is something, but having filmmakers who know you well and know your work and know eachother.. decide amongst themselves that you are to be awarded amongst them, well, that's something else. Its a Peer Award, actually, and its great validation. I don't think we can afford to offer any real prize, other than the symbolic pride of knowing you were chosen by your bucaneer brethren, to know you're admired, respected and appreciated. Hence, I needed a very fair process. I discarded a single-voting poll, because I imagined everyone would earn a vote or two, and the winner would be the one with three or four votes. Not really representative of what the majority thinks. In order to have a majority or a plurality, there needed to be few nominees, but if I just decreed who the nominees are out of the blue, it would (rightly) smack of favoritism. So here's the next best thing, we're going to do this in 4 stages over the course of a month: Stage 1, "NOMINATION" begins right now. In Stage 1, I'm looking for people to nominate other people to receive our award, in the following categories: "Best Filmmaker", "Best Director", "Best Writer". Please comment in this post, and state the names of the persons you're nominating, and for which category. Each person can only nominate one other person per category, not including him/herself. This way, we can't have a single person nominating 20 persons, and we can't have 20 persons all nominating themselves :) So, once again: please comment in this post, and state the names of three people you'd like to see awarded, one per category (Filmmaker, Director, Writer). You can nominate the same person for all three categories if you want, but you can't nominate yourself, cuz that would look funny :) Stage 2, "SECOND BEST" is exactly the same as Stage 1, except with one difference: you're not allowed to vote for your nominees. You -have- to vote for someone else, hence the name "Second Best". Why? Because otherwise it would be an exact repeat of Stage 1! One half of all nominees will be eliminated at the end of this stage, according to votes. Stage 3, "RUNNING MATES" is exactly the same as Stage 1, with one difference: you get to vote twice in each category. So, if in Stage 1 you only had one vote per category and you gave it to your nominee, and in Stage 1 you still had one vote per category and you gave it to the Second Best, in this stage you have 2 votes per category, and you can give them to whoever you want, assuming they haven't been eliminated yet. The only thing you can't do is give both votes to the same person. All nominees will be eliminated at this point, except for three in each category. Stage 4, "CORONATION" will simply be one poll per category, each with its three finalists. Easy as pie! Since each stage lasts a week, we should have our Best Filmmaker, Best Director and Best Writer in a month! How does this sound? Complicated, I know. Lol. I know. I'm just trying to make something fair where the winner truly gets a significant number of votes, a plurality, or at least a majority, and therefore the award is meaningful. I will re-post the instructions as clearly as possible at the beginning of each stage. Alas, Stage 1 begins right now, and here are the instructions: STAGE 1: Nomination. INSTRUCTIONS: Please post a comment below. In that comment, nominate one person for Best Filmmaker, one person for Best Director, and one person for Best Writer. You can nominate the same person for two or all three categories if you want.
P.S. Anyone has any ideas for the name of our Award? I like "Golden Pirate" but in filmmaking terms, it sounds like movie piracy, hehehe! So, in order to make this broader, you dont need to mention a project at all, just say who you think its the best filmmaker, best director and best writer, that's it, nothing more to it, no other restrictions. Its the only way we'll have more than 20 names in the hat!

Brainstorming Time!!
I have been thinking about a poster the last days, about an award (you may had a cool surprise), and about the name of this Awards, and came with a name:
The Lion's Fate Ship Award.
With that name I was looking for a name that may came from an actual Pirate Ship, also I would love to use this name as a tribute, and this is the explanation:
Lion: It's a reference to the Surname of our AMAZING host "Marco Leon", I didn't wanted to use it literally, so I used the english translation, wich by the way... sound more pirate!
Ship: Karmacritic is like a ship where we, all pirates are fighting though the seas of the movie world, it's our preferred thematic use in the boards, so it's clear...
Fate: It's a synonymous of Karma, so I wanted to make the pirate use of the word Karma, in our pirate ship name!
Tribute to the work of Marco in Karmacritic, is a MUST, whatever the winners are, so I think it's more than FAIR that Marco has it's place in this award!

I havn't actually made a tally, but it still seems like only 3 or so people will be nominated in each category to move on to the second round. Which, I guess is fine, it just sounded like you wanted a bigger pool than that for the second round.
Also, I'm wondering if we shouldn't list all the viable nominees somewhere...as there are alot of talented people who don't pop up as much as they used to that we might forget. Also, maybe putting a piece of each persons work somewhere for people to reference, as we probably haven't all seen something of everyones.

Craziness.
For best writer, I really believe that THE BEST writer should be nominated. I'll base my thoughts on two very important things here, which makes the two people I want to name VERY important.
Big Sugar won sublim and has been noticed by Hollywood.
Marco Leon's writing landed him representation and has some news to share when he's ready to share it.
We all could look at various aspects of why a writer should be nominated. And there are a lot of good ones here. But to be the best, you have to be the best. And Big Sugar and Marco have proven to be the best. OnSetChicago is also a contender.
If anyone is having trouble figuring out who should be nominated, I say pick from these three. EXCEPT FOR THIS FINAL THOUGHT---WHICH IS WHY I'M FEELING WIERD ABOUT "THE BEST WRITER".
but here is what is the tough tough for me. I haven't read anyone's full length screenplays, or seen them interpreted on film. All I've seen is what Captain Lady Parker did with "getting ahead in the business" and Captain Peceno's "House of the Smoking Guns". What's tougher even for me is this----that this isn't a screenwriting award thing--so in essence, nominating someone because they wrote a good script is irrelevant---it's sort of like nominating someone for best director that hasn't directed anything, but talks about cool ideas and you assume, well, yeah, those images would look great on screen, let's nominate this person for best director---
When a person gets an award, it's because they have achieved something. You award achievements.

All this talking about awards based on what if's is silly. If we want an awards "show" then we need to have our own KC Film Fest of finished work only. When I say finished I mean DONE and show. This includes STORMY. The film is not done yet, so how can we base any award on what we think it is. That goes with everyone here.
Have a festival, show our completed work and from that we vote. Simple!!!!!!!!
