Production Almost Complete

frightymcgee's picture

Been a bit busier than I thought I'd be with this production. About a week before all kinds of things began to fall apart. Not really things within our control. One of our leads had to go out of town for a job the weekend we'd been planning to shoot so we had to recast that role. We got lucky and ended up finding a guy who is really good and fits the role pretty well. We also lost a few locations because of one of our location contacts going out of town the weekend of the shoot, they had to be around for us to actually get in the building. Again, someone came through for us in a big way and we locked down those lost locations right before we began shooting. Then it became clear that we forgot to get some key crew people to help with the production. Missing a photographer for the shoot (we would have been out all the promotional photos and stuff we'd have needed later), also some grips and makeup help. Our makeup crew was in a state of flux throughout pre-production and it finally came together right before we rolled tape.

Anyway, we kept taking the hits and kept moving forward determined to make a movie. We had to reschedule one major scene and we already planned for picking up a couple smaller things at a later time, so for the most part we got everything we needed in the original schedule. We also didn't have people out till 4AM every night like last time. In fact we didn't even shoot way over on any day and people got to go home and enjoy their weekend evenings.

We focused a lot on people who were skilled and talented but also on people we knew we could get a long with on set. There were no breakdowns or anything on set at all this time. No conflicts at all. This is very odd since most shoots Jerod and I are having at least one major issue if not more. The stress level on this production (aside from the weeks issues leading up to production) was a lot lower, there was a lot more fun. It was probably the best production I've ever worked on from the standpoint of being able to enjoy the process and also being able to work with people who were committed and  got along and did their jobs really well.

Overall I think most of the people, if not all, are satisfied and excited about the production and things going forward. There were some new things for me to deal with as a director such as being disturbed by my own material. I think even some of the crew and actors had a couple moments where things got a little too intense. Our Special Effects Supervisor even wrote a blog about it which has piqued the interest in some fans of the story. So things like that, even though hard to deal with personally, are turning out to be good for the movie.

Here are a couple promo graphics I put together:

We began promotion stuff before we even got through pre-production which I think was one of the smartest things we've ever done. We hit a couple articles, online radio shows, television show interview which is airing now on Cox Cable, and even a book (which I'm not sure when the guy is planning to release it). We are now hitting the media promo again and we have a talk show interview on Chopping Block Radio (NowLive.com) August 25th.

Awesome news!

So, elaborate on the disturbing material.

There's a scene that I

There's a scene that I specifically wrote into the movie that I thought would be fun to show audiences. I mean I know people are almost turned off by the tourture porn stuff after these past few years with Hostile and Saw III and IV. But it still brings in an audience and there are still things people have not seen.

My intention wasn't to do anything close to torture porn type stuff, but the idea we went with is pretty graphic and sickening. It was very intense to see it taking place on set. I actually was a bit emotionally disturbed for a couple days. I had a hard time dealing with what we were going to show. But at the same time it fits the character very well.

It's something I think some people will be really happy with, they will enjoy. Others I think will be disgusted.

In any case it's something I needed to do in exploring my darker side and the things I want to do in making movies. It's something that is a part of me and I need to learn to grow from it and use it.

I don't want to be another Eli Roth, but I do want to deliver things audiences will wince at and will embrace. Before this I have not really broken out of that "Safe" place in horror and so I guess this is my way of doing that.

With all that said I just hope it looks good in the edit because of how difficult it was to get through - mentally, emotionally, and even physically for the actress.

I don't want to go into detail because I want people to be surprised and I want people to want to see it and have their curiosity piqued. And since seeing the blog entry my effects supervisor posted and how it's making folks come to me and say how bad they want to see it, I think it will ultimately be good for us.

Also, doing this third and final installment has a lot of people chomping at the bit to get to see something, anything having to do with this movie. I'm a little surprised at that but I have emails from people almost daily asking about the movie and when it will be done and how they can't wait to check it out. It's putting some pressure on to make sure this thing is as good or better than the last time out. But I'm sure we can deliver with what we have.

This story is definately a departure from the second film, more so than Bloodline was a departure from the original. But I think it's in a fun way. Most people who've seen the screenplay are thrilled about it and really like what we've done.  Like I said, this is the last chapter so I really wanted to turn things over on their side and do a little something different. One big thing is we gave actors more lines so they'd have more ability to express their talent through delivering lines as well as emoting through action and expressions from body language.

Also, we kind of went in the other direction with the amount of violence in the movie. Instead of going with more bodies, we went with more intense scenes. We also show more on screen this time around, but still keeping in mind that it's not what you see that always scares you.

I could talk about this for a very long time obviously. I'll shut up now until someone else comes along asking questions. I don't mind talking, but I don't want to turn people away with huge long answers. Sorry people who are turned away by that.
