FableForge's Foundlings #20: Lexi Alexander and the PUNISHERThis is not really a foundling, but rather a combination of several things I ran into today. First, just so that we're on the same page, take a whiff of this:
Alright. So. More people are killed in these 2 minutes, than in the entirety of Rambo IV, and just as gorily if not more. Now that has been established, observe the following rumor courtesy of the always-on-the-scoop, the excellent Latino Review: Following up on an earlier article, We already know that Lexi Alexander has allegedly been fired from the film. Her own website So, there you have it. A Pg-13 movie. The Punisher. ... right. Latino Review goes on to rightly assume that THE DARK KNIGHT may have sold some Lions Gate people into thinking PG-13 is achievable with comic book characters, but look, there's no blood in THE DARK KNIGHT. Really, there isn't. The joker waves his knife all around a lot of people's faces, but he never actually cuts anybody. And most important of all, the Punisher is not Batman. The Punisher kills people. It's What He Does. For all the excessive blood and testosterone the trailer drips off, that's who the character is. I would never EVER take my kids to see the Punisher, even if its given a PG-13 rating. But here we arrive to the second part of this post, Lexi Alexander. I read some of her bio off Wikipedia and her own page: Lexi is a German immigrant who started as a martial artist, and came to the City of Angels working as a stunt girl. In 2003, she shot a short film that was so good, she got nominated for an Oscar for it, and that's how she got a career as a movie director. She directed this film, "The Punisher: War Zone". And now the rumor is, that by putting her foot down to keep it an R-Rating, she got canned at Lions Gate. Yup, the studio can fire a director out of her own movie, in post. And I can't help but feel a range of negative emotions about this. Hers was pretty much a Cinderella story, and obviously reason is on her side, but nevertheless she still gets thrown out to the curb again. Surely, she'll stand back up and find work elsewhere (she's an Oscar nominated Martial Artist!) but it still stings that "the dream" was happening for someone, and it came to such sudden crash. Another Hollywood story, I suppose. And its sad that the film will absolutely bomb as a PG-13 silliness, and people won't know or care enough to fairly apportion the blame. That, and other news about Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT (another Lion's Gate) bombing at Comicon, makes me fear that the boom-period for comics in film maybe has peaked. Which would be bad news for me. We'll see, I suppose, crossing my fingers. The trailer doesn't give me a lot of hope:

They can't show a trailer
They can't show a trailer like that at comic con and then release a pg-13 movie featuring nothing that was shown. You'd probably have a 45 minute movie.
I've been anticipating this movie for a long time. The Punisher is my favorite comic book character, and eventhough this movie isn't the ideal Punisher film I had in mind, it still looks bad ass beyond beliefe.
I Disappear
Goddamnit, what the purple Jesus fuck is going on? Man, this part and parcel of one of the worst fucking trends in the history of cinema; the kiddiefying of everything. Sorry, fellas, but The Dark Knight should've been a hard R. Don't get me wrong, I loved the fucking flick, but I swear it would've been cum-shot time had we seen a bit of the ol' ultraviolence. And now, we're going to suck the meat right out of a movie about A GUY WHO SHOOTS MOTHERFUCKERS IN THE FACE TEN AT TIME! Stop the fuckin' planet, I want to get off.
If it's just ridiculous, it's bad.
IF IT IS RRIIIDDDIICCUUULLOOUUSS, then it's okay.
Punisher War: Zone Will Be
Punisher War: Zone Will Be Rated R, Rumors Are Bogus
SOURCE: http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/new...-rated-way.php
"There is a rumor that has started circulating around this
little thing called “the internet” that Lionsgate is pushing for the
next installment of The Punisher to be rated PG-13. Given all we know
of the franchise, this immediately smelled foul. Not being without
charms and fully utilizing our ruggedly handsome looks, we tracked down
our own source who is, of course, “close to the production.” Their
word? “********.”
We could add some words in front of that, like “complete,” “total,” or
“utter,” but it throws off the feng-shui of the post, but they would be
appropriate. It looks like this originated over at Latino Review, who
indicate that they have their own source. Now, I love those Latino
Review guys, but I have no idea who they’re talking to. I do, however,
definitely know our source and know that I trust them completely.
Punisher: War Zone will be Rated R for Rambo-Levels of violence. Which
is a good thing, because the kill count of Rambo (another Lionsgate
release) was 236 and featured some of the best gore violence in years.
Now, while being Rated-R, the film is still facing a troubled
production run, detailed by our Neil Miller at the end of last month.
Who knows what else is going on in making the film “presentable,”
though it probably has to do mostly with timing. While our source is
more than enough for me, for you kids keeping count at home there are a
few other things to keep in mind. First, former Marvel Entertainment
CEO Avi Arad (and current Marvel producing partner) Avi Arad has always
said that The Punisher was one character who would carry the R-Rating
at Marvel (the other being Blade). Second, producer Gale Anne Hurd
spoke at great length at Comic Con about the film and stressed the
level of violence that would be in the film. Lastly, the exclusive
footage shown at Comic Con, which was very well received, was
definitely from a film that was Rated R, and it was the point they were
selling - brutal.
In summation, this PG-13 rumor is total “********.” Punisher: War Zone
is still not a ship sailing smoothly, but it will come to theaters with
that Rated R stamp all over it on December 5. And just in case you need
more evidence of the R-Ratedness, have a look at the clip below, which
was launched a few weeks back at Comic-Con."
And this....

Holy smokes, I go away and shoot some kids stuff for Disney, and the
whole world is a different color when I return. Again I appear here to
dispel rumors. Please believe:
Lexi is not off the film
Lexi is still involved in the edit process
The film is not (nor could it ever be) PG-13
Today I saw a cut that ran 91 minutes
Lexi did in fact get married
Lexi is an incredibly talented director, and this film kicks major ass, as will be proven when it is released IN THEATRES DECEMBER 5th
The film is most certainly not all exploding heads, but will reveal a great deal of Franks personna and pain
This
film has been difficult from the begining, from a bitter Canadian
winter, to endless nights, to rampant sickness, Lexi has fought to make
a killer Punisher film for fans and non fans alike.
Initially
we were to release in September, but for whatever reason (not the
quality of the film or edit IMHO) it was decided to release in
December. That extra time has given everyone a chance to put their two
cents worth in, but rest assured, Lexi is still stearing the boat, and
she is a great captain.
When I hear vicious unfounded troll
rumors like the "film was unwatchable" or "a total mess" it makes my
blood boil. I want to punish the corrupt. People sit on their fat asses
trolling the internet, people that have never even looked through a
motion picture camera, and make judgements on a work of art that
they've never seen, it's like saying a baby will be ugly before it is
born, I can't freaking wait for this film to come out and prove the
nay-sayers wrong.
Sorry for the rant, I just love something wonderful you have yet to see-
I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THIS FLICK! DAMN IT!
Lock n' Load baby! Sucks about the pg-13 bullshit though. And I heard the director is hot! Damn it! I want a private screening with her!
EZEQUIEL
Wasn't I the one who told
Wasn't I the one who told you she was hot?
NOPE--
Marco told me! haha
Post a picture of her!
EZEQUIEL
Yeah.. But I also remember
Yeah.. But I also remember mentioning her to you way back when you called my cell while I was at work.
