Music Video Contest ResultsWell, here they are: 1: 2: 3: 4: Submitted by FableForge on September 4, 2008 - 9:18pm. |
Feel free to comment
Hey everyone, check out the update to the bottom of the announcement: the deadline extends until sunday noon. We'll post the works as they come. Feel free to comment on them below, just dont say who did what :)
Yeah. I have to apologize
Yeah. I have to apologize for not delivering. I hate giving excuses
for these kind of things but my editing software away from home (my
laptop) was being way too difficult for me. The school computers have
final cut but in order to use them I have to compress the videos which
would take 14 hours. I was stuck using i-movie which is no good for
this because a watermark shows up on all the videos which is annoying.
Its the same watermark that showed up on Davonie's music video clip.
Anyway, there's my excuse. I may show a video off for fun my it won't be my entry.
By the way I vote for the second one. One minor flaw though is I wish they used just a little bit more clips of Rachel in it.
Looking forward to seeing your video,
Whether its for fun or as your entry, either way I'd love to see what you come up with. I recommend Adobe Elements, actually, its low-resources and powerful enough to get the job done, works well on my humble laptop, etc.
It's all a learning experience. Good luck with film school man.
Yeah, I have Adobe Elements
Yeah, I have Adobe Elements at home in Boston. I'm definetly going to install it on the laptop over Christmas Break now.
WATERMARKS
In all my pieces, I will always show my style... my true art... WHICH LIES BEHIND DA STATIC IN LIFE. If not, why do it in da first place? We all die... and that is why I will always show my colors... my truths in life... before it fades and dissolves wit da rest of our world.
I wanna say sorry to anybody who saw it and got offended by it... I didn't mean to if it did... I thought it was tasteful and one of da most aesthetic pieces I've made to date. I believe dat I made EVERY CHARACTER to how I currently see BEAUTY in life... and if anyone thought a part was ugly, better for me cuz I can have that part all to myself of seeing it beautiful.
How
it is possible to see your video
I would like to see that please send me by private message
the addres
Thanks!!
I went on vimeo and did a
I went on vimeo and did a search on karmapirate.
I hope I didn't offend you Davonie. I assumed which one was yours based on similarities I noticed from your previous videos. Actually I have a pretty good feeling who the other videos belong to as well but I won't say anything because I'm sure I'd be right.
I simply just don't want mine to say flipbook.com at the bottom of my music video, but under the circumstances right now I don't really have a choice.
WATERMARKS REDUX
No reason for apologies or anything. simply resubmit without watermarks!
so does dat mean...
I don't at least get a "C" to pass? And be able to go on da field trip to da Holly Premiere after party... hAhA
That's cool
that the deadline got extended but really shame on you pirates for not making the deadline. For god's sakes don't commit to something if you know you can't get it done, it makes everyone look bad!
Much respect
Lady Parker, I know I've said this before, but you are very very high in my book as a professional who keeps her word. You finished GETTING A HEAD ON THE BUSINESS precisely on time while almost no one else did. If I was a producer or an investor, this is exactly the kind of reliability and seriousness I would look for in anyone I'd do business with. Its what puts the pro in professional. Much respect to you.
Speaking of VOAT, we have 4 shorts so far, including mine. If we reach at least 8, (it doesnt matter which anymore as long as they're vaguely in the genre) I think it'll be worth pursuing the DVD at that time... for now we'll wait, I guess :/
What I liked and didn't like about videos 1 and 2
About video 1, I -really- like the sequence at the end where Rachel reaches into the water, then we see Juan's reflection in it... that was a good touch, it has an emotion value in it, very nice. I also liked that the author chose generally the best shots of Rachel, and that at the end... he's basically just admiring how beautiful she is, with the final shot. What I did not like, was that I couldnt sense a pattern to the different clips being shown, it felt a little bit random at times.
About video 2, I like it that it has a three part structure, stormy, pool, stormy, and the shots seem organized around this somehow. There is also synch between the timing and tone of the visuals to the timing and tone of the music. I like that the rachel shots were more or less color-matched to the movie shots. What I didn't like, is that the crescendo towards the third and final chorus could have been emphasized visually somehow stronger, and the actor cameos towards the end are a bit hard to notice, specially Marlies.
That's what I see so far, let's see who else finishes before Sunday noon. We can't move the deadline further, due to the radio show. Anyone who finishes, please email me the address to their work so I can post it here.
Great experience
watching different versions from a same work
what happens with the rest of the captains?
Fire your cannons!! that is a great experience ever
working together with Rachel and Ez
and also making of Karma a Place to learn and share
Go Captains!!
About videos 1 y 2
Video 1- it seams like there are thre ways open to work
a) the singer and the song always trying to show her well in everyway
b) the movie, with flashbacks and forwards trying to show the quality of the shots
c) the singer being introduced into the movie the conexion between the three ways of the entire clip
video 2- it seams like an artistic way to do the clip
I like the entire peace of the clip, I miss more from Rachel
also I like the treatment of the image very evocative
Rum for more entries!!!
Pirates of caribbean!!!
That is a private
message for Marco
Hi Bro!
Birthday Tale!!!
;-)
True that!
You're right my friend :)
And btw, I want to remind everyone, including the two people whose submissions are above, that there is still time for corrections and polishes, just use the option inside vimeo to replace films, it should work, all updates are welcome, so feel free to take the feedback and use it before sunday noon :)
I CAN'T WAIT TO--
I can't wait to see who did what. At first I didn't like the anonymous submission thing, but now---it is kinda fun!
EZEQUIEL
Yo Ho Ho!!
it is fun!
Rum for ya!!!
For Christ's Sake!
I must've been in the computer lab for 3 hours uploading footage and finally getting a chance to start editing and then out of nowhere the guy in charge walks up to me to tell me the lab is closing.
Alright, here is a preview of my edit. This is as far as I've gotten and you can see the watermarks I'm talking about.
flip4mac
I am so tempted to give in and dis macs again, but I'll restrain myself: have you tried the videolan player? It doesn't only play video files, it transcodes them too. You can take the wmv (or nearly anything for that matter) and end up with an mpg that should have no problem with iMovie.
I saw your work so far, and I liked that you matched the high points of the movie with the chorus, and even some of the lyrics too! Attention to detail pays off in music videos, you're on the right path! Too bad you're not eligible anymore cuz you just broke the anonymous rule. Heheheh :) I know you know :)
I haven't really figured
I haven't really figured out how to use that vlc player yet so I don't what'll happen.
Contest doesn't bother me by the way since I already mentioned I was now just doing the video for fun so I could show off what could have been if I was doing this in the comfort of my own home, free of watermarks. I mean, you're talking to one of the few filmmakers here who didn't subject himself to on the lot.
By the way, FUCK YOU MACINTOSH!
RUM for captain Young Blood!!
AARRR! you bring out the pirate in me! :)
And about videolan player: Open the movie file, then click on File>Wizard. A menu will ask where you want to transcode to, choose "Transcode/Save to File" and hit Next. Another menu will ask you what are you trying to transcode, choose "Existing playlist item", and the active video will show up selected in the list, by default. Hit Next. Put a checkmark on "Video" since we dont really need audio, and choose the least fancy codec you got installed. I usually pick MPEG-1 for safest. Choose the bitrate, 2048 is usually enough of an overkill for most things. Hit Next. Choose the encapsulation format, which kinda depends on the codec. Again, I usually go with MPEG 1. Hit Next. Choose the filename to give to your new converted file and where to save it. Hit Next, and VLC will do its magic, and you'll have an mpg instead of a wmv :)
Cool, I will use this now
Cool, I will use this now the next time I need to convert one of my files before uploading it onto a school computer.
Also, I'd like to suggest this idea to the actual contenders. The clips from the movie are letterboxed while the Rachel Lynn footage is not. I think having everything letterboxed will make the continuity between the clips flow a lot better and would look a lot more professional when the music video is added to the DVD.
Notice: Vimeo is experiencing technical trouble right now
But hey, what's technical trouble after all we've been through eh?
Anyway, right now, any video uploaded to vimeo gets stuck in the "Waiting 1 minute" message and never converts.
So here's how we adapt and improvise: contestants may now use any service they want, provided they use only the anonymous nick given to them, and the video is high quality. I doubt youtube works for this. Maybe LiveVideo, we'll see. Contestant 2 wishes to update his work, and vimeo has him stuck. Lets see how are things tomorrow.
Main Sail It Capn'
Can you squeeze into flv and upload to Karma's server?
http://vimeo.com/1674000
Is this the one I'm waiting for? This is the winner.
That one is definetly the
That one is definetly the winner. They did an awesome job coloring the video. It has to be one of Ez's friends in CA, cause they have footage from the movie that wasn't in the wmv Marco sent us.
Awesome video. Unlike most the other videos, it relied more on the Rachel Lynn footage than it did the footage from the movie. They kept the choice of shots simple and were most effective in the way they pieced the video together. Nice job John Doe, whoever you are.
just saw "Sin City" version
mo better
Did I mention that I really
Did I mention that I really want to see this movie now? EZ, hurry up and get this thing release. Or at least hook a brother up.
"I Read somewhere that sociopaths get a sadistic thrill from looking at their victims right in the eye. Nothing.... Might as well have been watching Oprah."
"You sick fuck!"
"Hey, at least I'm not a sociopath!"
the track os OFF by .35 sec,
the track os OFF by .35 sec, and SHOULD be tighter... I still think #2 of the 2 real entries is the best.
STORM IT UP!
Brendan! I can't wait for you to see the film also! I can't wait for everyone to see it! The movie itself is still in it's final stages of post! Kico Velarde (PVC-1) is editing a final pass at the film (which I'm very excited about cause he's a killer editor!), the final coloring work/picture at full res--then sound mix and score!
*Hey Marco, maybe the winner of the music video contest should also get a free copy of the DVD, which of course will include the music video as a DVD Extra!*
As far as these three entries for the contest go. I made a promise not to comment on any of the entries until they are all in. So I will wait until tomorrow to critique. I also won't talk to Rachel about them.
But I will say this. I am extremely dissapointed that there are only three entries. I want to see more! it's kinda fun watching these cuts--and it is amazing to see how each film editor interprets the material. I've always said "it's all done in the editing room!"
So good luck to the three contestants! Hopefully we get at least two more! AT LEAST TWO MORE! COME ON! let's make this really interesting!
PIRATES! YO HO!
EZEQUIEL
Update!!
Contestant two has updated his entry with...glows.. or something. I love it, it does look like SIN CITY.
And we have a new contestant in the mix, with AWESOME perfectly colo-matched well synched video.
It Is A Contest Now, ladies and gentlemen!
Very good work!
Both editors did a great job!!!
I personally identify more with the second one. Seeing Rachel under all that pouring rain, it reminds me soooooooooooo much of my experience during those dark, frozen cold, wet... and stormy shootings. And it's matches 100% with the style of the movie.
The first is also really good indeed. I agree with the friend who said that it reminds of Sin City style... Is that good though? With all these new filmmakers popping up every single minute, isn't it a smarter promoting approach to try to be as original as possible? And that goes for actors, singers and writers too. Replicas never went that far.
As far as story telling goes the first gives you a better idea of what happens in the movie. If it was just a music video and not a soundtrack, this would be a more prefferable way to go. Now me being part of this project and seeing it businesswise and since the song will be released before the movie, I'd rather not give the story away that soon.
And YES, it IS a pity that only two were able to deliver. It would be extremely interesting to see more.
Where do we vote?
Eva-Maria Leonardou
Eva Maria, pleasure to see you!!
Eva, I've seen the movie and I love the way you performed in it!!
I also like the way you posted your thoughts here, I agree with much of what you said! Just one note, we have three videos now, and I think when you said second one, you were referring to the third one, and when you said first one, you were referring to the second one. The first one, which you probably haven't seen, its here at http://vimeo.com/1654614?pg=embed&se...
Its also in this page, but since its the first one, my guess is you thought it was part of the image that says "Dark and Stormy Song". Heh :)
KarmaPirate44 & KarmaPirate32
Since the videos will hopefully keep increasing, you are right my dear Marco. Lets be more precise:
In my comments "First Video" refers to KarmaPirate44 and
"Second Video" refers to KarmaPirate32.
I'm very excited a new one came in. I'll watch it asap.
Eva-Maria

Contestant number 1 has updated his work, re-check it out everyone!
It is time
to be serious, since there are some people working here
on the clips, it is the man against the machine, everyone has his own method
I want to explain the way I use to work, it could be longer to explain, for that
I made a video, here you could see Captain Peceno working
http://es.

I love the way you work, Captain Peceno!!
Very happy and and with rythm! Shake those hips!

fix perfectly, all my respect, you are an authentic Pirate Captain
I love your work too indeed
there is nothing more clever than humor sense
you got it!!!
For Karma Pirate 50
I love the selection of the shots and their sequence, but I don't like the graphics, although I admit it's a style it might appeal to some. It IS definately an interesting artistic choice, but I don't think it matches with the style of the movie.
The technical problems with the size of the screen, which keeps changing from wide to narrow, need to be corrected to have Rachel's shots match with the shots from the movie.
I love the shots of Rachel he picked but they also need to be refined with color correction. I would like to see some of those shots of hers included in Pirate 32's version.
Eva-Maria
THIS IS WHY I LOVE EVA-MARIA
You know, Eva-Maria and I have been really close for some time now. And I love how she is so involved and always ready to support and never loses sight of what's going on.
Eventhough, she is a pain in the ass to work with (YOU KNOW i LOVE YOU BABY! HAHA)
My entire cast is pretty much like this. There has been so much going on with the making of this flick, and everyone remained tight, faithful, trustful (well...not everyone) and supportive---and all of the stormy team is proud of the film, proud of the song, and lucky to have these submissions by such talented editors.
And just so you all know, Eva-Maria isn't just an actress. She's directed a film, that I have seen, that is very good. And she's written a screenplay that she won't let me read. See--she's a pain in the ass. haha
I do agree with the color correction critique.
EZEQUIEL
If
I agree
with Eva Maria
otherwise, you have an spanish name
do you speak spanish??
No Spanish
No. I don't speak Spanish. I wish I did. It would make it so much easier to speak some French to Ezequiel when HE is a pain in the ass! Ha!Ha!
Eva-Maria
Hahahaa
you just have to belive
Pirate Captains are a kind of bad boys!!
but finally you will lern to love them!!
You are pretty like hell
you are cleaver like heaven
Rum Bless Eva Maria!!!
are you married?
do you have a boyfriend?
what is your favorite color?
do you like a walk under the stars?
answer to the first!!
hahahaha
Is this a dating site?
Since this is not a dating site, I will not answer to the first question...
My favourite color used to be pink and red, but the latest years it has changed to the blue of the sea...not that of the Ocean, but more like the Mediterranean green-blue waters...maybe because I miss them so much since I came here...
I love walks under the stars on remote shores and secret mountain paths lit by the full moon.
Eva-Maria
It is not a date site
I want a date with you
;-)
CAPTAIN DRACULA!
Guess who gets to go dancing with Eva-Maria this saturday?
That's right! Captain Ezequiel!
YO HO YO HO A Pirates Life For Me!

Eva-Maria
Yes I have
I don´t want to show that again
take a look to some request here at karma to show my picture
otherwise, I am more concern about the soul
I will remain in the shadows, meanwhile someone reach to get the kiss
of the glory
Cyrano
Another pirate ship comes over the horizon!
There is a 4th contestant now, guns blazing! Everyone check it out!
SINCE IT'S OFFICIALLY SUNDAY
I said I wasn't going to talk about the submissions until Sunday. And it's Sunday! Wow. What a tough decision it is going to be for Rachel Lynn to make!
I'm listening to her CD "NEW DAY" right now. If you don't have it, get it! It is awesome!
Back to the videos.
Everyone one of them is so different! Again, since I was one of the directors, it's fun to see how talented editors can take the content and make it their own personal vision. Rum bless editors!
Rachel looks gorgeous, doesn't she! Rum bless Rachel Lynn! And Rum bless Rachel for writing such a kick ass song! And be sure that she is humbled by your interest, talent and hard work in your submission, as so am I. Thank you all! You guys/gals inspire us with your creativity! And thank you for supporting our little flick!
It is very difficult for me to critique each one individually. Each one evokes a different emotion, tone and feel. And it's strange--it's the same song represented visually different every time, and each one is so unique, that it makes you feel different eventhough it is the same song! THE POWER OF IMAGES. But we can't forget it all started with THE POWER OF THE SONG and THE POWER OF RACHEL'S BEAUTIFUL VOICE.
Yes. I'm her biggest fan.
One of the stars of my film, Eva-Maria Leonardou just returned from her home country Greece, and listened to the song for the first time yesterday. She called me and said "Ezequiel, this song is a hit!"
And now, later, Rachel will announce the winner of this contest and we'll have a hit video with a hit song. I also believe this song is a hit. Not just because it's the title track to my film, but because it really is a damn rad song!
And if I was her right now, I'd have a really hard time deciding the winner also.
Sorry about the disqualified contestant. But thank you for your effort.
Here is the lesson in making music videos.
1) you have to sell the artist. Stay close to the vision of their song and interpret it with images.
2) it's their song. so you have to represent them well. Your images are a celebration of their music.
3) This is the perfect example of a collision of arts. Music meets picture. When doing this, you have to listen carefully to not only the sound, the voice--but the heart and soul. What you want to do is capture moments and make them work with the feeling.
4) Since this is the title track to a film, the challenge was not only to slam a song and image together, but also make it work with not only the tone of the film, but what the film is about. I believe all the submissions did that.
________________
Those are my 4 things.
Four directors. Four editors. But only one cut.
Best of luck to you all!
EZEQUIEL
On a Dark and Stormy Contest!
Yeah rock it!
C'mon guys send your videos and participate!
Rachel Lynn's song is amazing, as her voice and image in camera are. The Camera loves her, the microphone love her, Ezequiel loves her, and we all love her!
Can't wait to see the film EZ, it's gonna be fuxxing cool!
FUXXING COOL CAPTAIN XARACH!
I can't wait for you to see it also! It is a visually stunning film! And considering the time and budget restraints we had, I think you as a filmmaker will appreciate what we all as a team accomplished with so little to work with!
Even the music video! I promise you, we shot it in about 3 hours for only the cost of the tapes. 30 dollars. 3 hours. Good team work. Inspiring talents involved! And now inspiring karma editing talents involved!
PIRATES ROCK IT LIKE A ROCKET!
EZEQUIEL
30 Dollars for 3 Tapes?
