So you wanna make a movie, kidHey guys, I'm posting links for two articles for anyone who not only wants to make a movie, but is responsible for what happens to it after it's finished. The first is from today's Indiewire http://www.indiewire.com/people/2008... The second is the infamous 'sky is falling' article that you may have already seen http://www.indiewire.com/biz/2008/06... The two articles together give an interesting perspective on the current distribution climate. Enjoys! Submitted by tamrey on September 16, 2008 - 10:16am. |

HERE IS HOW I FEEL ABOUT IT
The bottom line is this. DOES YOUR FILM HAVE AN AUDIENCE
If an audience likes it, if it is unique enough to capture attention, then none of this matters. If nobody likes it, then yeah, it's a tough sell. even if people like it, it's a tough sell on the indie level.
What makes the film stand out? that is the question. and nobody knows that answer. it is all up to the audience.
And Tamara, I hope soon to see you at a festival, and our movies play back to back! How much fun would that be!

Check out this "must see for filmmakers" documentary.
If you don't get a chance to watch it, basically, it is 76 minutes of Hollywood folks talk about how "controlled luck" and "happenstance" determine whether a movie is a hit or a flop.
My feeling what the point of the movie is, is that you can have a perfect formula and have a flop and vice versa and that there is no way of knowing what will be a big hit or a big flop.

I really wish you wouldn't delete your blog posts, davonie
And this is why I wish that: every time you take down a blog post of yours (and you've done this many, many times) you take down all the comments from other people with it. Basically, you made it so they wasted their time. Many times I've had a comment of my own to post in blogs of yours, but I stop myself; cuz what's the point if you're gonna delete it all the next day? Think about it man. Take care,

Times are changing...Film Festivals Go On Line...
Got this email today entitled: "10 Festivals Streaming Free."
Our good friends over at the Alamo Drafthouse run one of the best festivals anywhere. And we're not the only ones who think so - Variety called Fantastic Fest "Geek Telluride," and also named it one of the "10 Festivals We Love". In previous years, Fantastic Fest has hosted surprise premieres for such films as "There Will Be Blood," "Apocalypto," and "Pan's Labyrinth."
As great as Fantastic Fest is, this year it just got a little better. We are all atremble here at B-Side with excitement over the launch of Fantastic Fest Online. In partnership with sponsor AMD, B-Side is streaming 10 films from Fantastic Fest 2008 from Saturday, 9/14 through Saturday 9/20 at http://fantasticfestonline.bside.com - absolutely free. And we're not talking festival rejects - these 10 films are all official selections to Fantastic Fest that were hand-picked to represent the festival worldwide.
Audience members who watch films online are eligible to vote for the 'Online Audience Favorite' awards, which will be presented to the winning feature and short film on Monday, September 22 as part of the official 2008 Fantastic Fest awards ceremony. Co-sponsor AMD will be providing cash and technology prizes for the winning films.
In their official announcement, Alamo founder and Fantastic Fest director Tim League explained the motivation behind FF Online:
As 2008 Fantastic Fest badges are sold out and some folks don't have the money to travel to Austin for the festival in the first place, we have teamed up with two of our festival sponsors, AMD and B-Side, to give everyone a taste of the fun for free.
I am personally very excited to be working with these filmmakers, B-Side and AMD to provide this unique new experience for genre film enthusiasts across the globe. Utilizing technology to provide simple and free access to great new film talent, Fantastic Fest Online may very well be paving the way to redefining what the term 'film festival' means in the future.
We are thrilled to be working with Fantastic Fest for the 3rd year in a row, and are excited to be helping them pave the way.
Check out the list of films and watch now: http://fantasticfestonline.bside.com/2008/films
Questions about how to use Fantastic Fest Online: http://www.bside.com/help/ffonline
There you have it. If there's something you'd like to see, or anything on your mind, we'd love to hear it. We know the audience is never wrong.
yup
There's little in either of those articles I disagree with. I think the entire landscape has changed. Especially for "indie film" as it doesn't exist as we knew it in the 1990's. How many no name starring movies have you seen signed from SUNDANCE and making it into the multiplex?
OPEN WATER 2002 and NAPLEON DYNOMITE 2002, and NAPOLEON DYNOMITE had some decent name cameos, etc.
SLAM BAM
Elias Matar and I were speaking about this just this morning. He was in the car with one of his best friends, screenwriter David Aaron Cohen (Friday Night Lights). And they were discussing this also--sort of. It was about how the gap between studio and indie is getting larger and larger.
Think about this. When a studio was interested in a couple of writers to take an assignment, they would take meetings with about 3-5 writers they really liked then went from there. Now, they are taking meetings with 10 or more writers. What does that tell you? That the studio isn't making that many more films and that there are a ton of more writers out there looking for work.
Q: Why is that?
A: Because more and more people are out making indie flicks since the technology is now so available to virtually everyone.
The business is definitely changing. I certainly don't know where it is going. I have theories. I won't lie, the last few meetings I've had landed me back at square one. And I'm thinking, what! Call my rep. Ask why the NO. The answer was, they have 15 other writers on their list--and some of them are A-list. And I'm like damn it! And then I stop and think, why are A-listers going for the same project little E is going for?
It is getting more and more competative. And one might have thought that it might have gotten easier. Sorry folks, it hasn't and it isn't going to get any easier.
I think that for the indie filmmaker, what you have to do is just go out and make a film. Hope that it is well recieved at some film fests and that it finds distribution and that then you go out and make another film. then another and another--and not really worry about whether or not it will play for a week at selected theaters or wherever. Make your film and give it your own personal voice--AND BE HEARD.
Captain Boo Ross the Boss knows a lot about this. I think I'm gonna have to call you soon Cap for some advice on advices cause I'm split right now. I'm not sure what to do first and so many people are giving me their suggestions--and all of them are different. Some advice coming from huge Hollywood dogtags and I'M SPLIT RIGHT DOWN THE CENTER!"
I have another project lined up to direct. A Sumthin' sumthin' I wrote. A horror flick. I won't say what it is cause I don't want to "Brad" around until it's real and there. And I'm not sure if it will be a studio film, but I am certainly sure that it isn't going to be a little itty bitty indie. So, articles like these are very informative.
But until then. It's still Stormy Night time and I'll share my experiences on what the haps are!

The Scorpion King
TV is "free" one catch, "commercials."
Now you can watch a 2002 movie that cost $60,000,000.00 to make for "free" without going to the movies and paying for a ticket, without VHS, without a Blu Ray or DVD player, without TIVO or DVR, without a television, without cable, Direct TV, satelite dish...
All you need is an Internet device.
The catch? "Commercials" you cannot skip, intermixed in the movie.
Plus the distributer has "proof" available "hits" to show the advertiser/sponsor.
Remember old TV? Where shows had "sponsors" they still do for the most part.
But what about a "sponsor" for a movie, rather than the LLC/investor approach?
Like they do in NASCAR? One big giant sticker all over the movie?
Jack Daniels Presents....
McDonald's Presents...
Edge Shave Gel Presents...(current sponsor/adverstiser on IMDB Theater's Presentation of The Scorpion King-click while the ad is on you go to here.)
Studio Tent Pole Movie Presents...
Domino's Pizza Presents...(with this one you could click on the ad on your device and order a pizza without leaving your chair or couch?)
Not talking about product placement in the classic sense.
Just thinking out loud here.
Rather than talking about ROI you talk likely number of "hits" to the sponsor/co-producer.
So the sponsor/co-producer is buying an "advertisement" in the form of a movie.
Plus, a "movie" is much more exiting than an "ad in a magazine or newspaper."
Millions are spent and lost on print/newspaper ads, commercials, that don't sell the product every day.
Give the owner of the company a cameo?
Let's face it, most Indie movies lose money, the investors usually never recoup.
The sponsor/co-producer would be "advertising." Of course you would need legal advice on this on how to structure it.
Once the production company uploads it, they (and everyone else that worked on the project) has been paid from the "advertiser/co-producer/sponsor" per the production agreement and are on to the next project.
Stars are alread making millions in commercials overseas. This is more classic commercial advertising though.
How...
do we get to these sponsors?
IN RESPONSE TO JOHN MEREDITH AND SPONSERS
Cool idea. But I don't know how that would work. Hell, I don't even know how indie filmmaking works, I'm still learning and pulling my hair out the closer I get to the final cut of the storm.
You want to know what I still believe? Believing in yourself. If you believe, and if you know you can deliver (whether or not an audience loves or hates is beyond your control), then you will find a way. there is always a way not only with indie filmmaking, but also with studio films.
I've said it a million times. All it takes is good ol' fashioned hard work, commitment and yes...certain sacrifices. And also, remember to be cool and do business in good faith. The business is wild enough as it is. Keep opportunistic people away, liars away, schemers away and just plain assholes out of it.
But in any case, I don't know if I would like sponser on any of my films. I know it sounds stupid and now I'm talking like an artist--but I feel that would take you out of the experience of watching a film.
That's my take. Cut. That's a wrap.

BRAINSTORMY
Just throwing out some thoughts.
Even snowboarders get "sponsors" ;)
Indie filmmakers get "investors."
What if a product "sponsored" a film, an Indie film?
Yes, there are a lot of..."what about this"...and "what about thats"...just trying to "think out of the box and out of the lines" a bit...
Good point E, this brings up the Art vs. Money debate again.
Would you rather have made a movie you love that lost money, or worse no one sees (or both), or a movie you hated that made you rich?
2 years ago Indies had to be "made on film" to be taken seriously, now, it has totally changed, I think the distribution models are on the cusp of a major change.
Internet
I think the sponsor thing could work well for interenet distribution. Hulu.com (Appleweed will be playing there soon) stream films with commercials cut in about every 10-12 minutes, but I don't see why they couldn't do a pre movie add as a sponsor type thing. It would probably be more expensive for the advertiser than splitting the cost with 5 other companies.
One danger of a sponsor, especially as an investor type before the shoot is that they could want input into the content and execution of your film... but if you have no other way to finance, then maybe.
It also seems like sponsor is really just product placement's ugly cousin. A sponsor would have more accountability as an endorser of your film as opposed to a more passive role by being 'seen' in the film. That seems a bigger risk for them.
Thanks for the 'Awwwnold' commercial. priceless, mr meredith, priceless.

INTERNET SHOWS
I think, that if you want to exploit a film on the internet--that that is ok. but I think a film should be a film.
If you want something online, why not start a webisodic series? That's still kinda hot, right?
DRINK UP ME'HEARTIES YO HO!
You are welcome Tami
There are a bunch of these.
Mega stars get paid a lot of money for these commercials.
My understanding is that they cannot be played on American TV as it may tarnish their power.
STORM IT OUT!
Art vs. Money. Once more I have to express that I want whatever film I make to make money. I'm not into the starving artist thing. But I don't want my film interrupted every 12 minutes. I think it takes away from the movie watching experience.
But if an indie filmmaker is having a horrific and terrible time finding money to finance his/her show, then why not? I don't know. Like I said, I'm new to this also. But I seriously SERIOUSLY don't want to make another ultra low budget film. And the one I'm almost done with totally for the love of it, to gain experience and to prepare myself for a much bigger picture. As much as I love Stormy Night--I feel that it doesn't fully represent what I'm really capable of doing.
John Meredith wrote: Would you rather have made a movie you love that lost money, or worse no one sees (or both), or a movie you hated that made you rich?
That is a very difficult question to answer. I don't know if I would ever hate one of my own films. If any of them make me rich--then I would love it even more. I want to be rich as fuck. But I also do want to earn it and be proud that something I made entertained people.
The beauty of where I'm at right now, is that a lot of trust is being put on my shoulders for my next picture--and the producer attached feels that the script I wrote needs some little fixin's, and that's great cause she is there to support and make sure the screenplay is as cool as it can be. And I want to make sure the film attracts and audience, and that we make some $$$. Gotta make a living right? Gotta make sure a lot of people see it. Gotta make sure the cast is proud of being a part of the picture.
I think distribution comes no matter what if you got a cool flick. Why worry so much about it? I won't lie, I do worry, then I don't, then I do, then I don't. But I believe.
DRINK UP ME'HEARTIES YO HO!
Options
Yes, having your film interrupted every 12 minutes is not ideal, but if the audience doesn't mind, then that's their choice. I think the idea of giving your audience a choice helps if you're self distributing and reach more people in a grass roots kind of way. Right now, Aweed is available on Indieflix, Bside, Heretic, Caachi, and soon Hulu and Amazon in formats DVD, Stream, Download. People go to sites that deliver movies the way they want to experience them. So, my thought is diversify, diversify, diversify. Audience calls the shots and I'll give them as many options as I can.
Tamara
www.operationjohnnyappleweed.org
OPTION THE OPTIONS
The question is though....how do you make money?
For example, if I could make more money working at the local restaurant, then why spend your own money on a film that isn't going to make you any money and be broke? That isn't business. That's blah.
DRINK UP ME'HEARTIES YO HO!
With the...
..."sponsor model" you would get paid by the production company which would receive money from the advertisor/sponsor/co-producer.
Just like making a tv commercial but it is a movie.
I think "art" would be lost in this model though as you would be a "crew for hire."
I THINK
I think, I'll stay with the "real" movie business.
