Whoa whoa whoa! Danny Boyle, hands down! Trainspotting might be the best soundtrack ever put together. And The Beach isn't far behind. And lest we forget the amazing score for 28 Days Later.
Are They Still

When John Williams dies I'm leaving the planet.
Mr. Jay Yuma
Much respect to you.
I was able to see John Williams live with his magic in Concord CA.
To me, John Williams is the most important composer of all time, but I have others that I love a lot.
I like music a lot, I am not sure why.
Mr. Ouchmouth
Nice choice.
What tracks stand out to you? :)
Well both Trainspotting and
Well both Trainspotting and The Beach are such good soundtracks...not because of any particular track, but just the whole thing evoking a specific mood and tone.
As for 28 Days Later, In the House, In a Heartbeat is just a fantastic piece of music. No wonder I've been hearing it in movie trailers lately.
I absolutely love John
I absolutely love John Williams and anyone who uses him to put music to their movies. I think he takes the most simple things and turns them into these super cinematic overtures that inspire the right emotions driving a scene. However, I think Quentin Tarantino hands down has the most interesting soundtracks as he often uses music that isn't well known (off the beaten path type of things) in his movies, and it fits perfectly to his stories.
I hear you McGee
Anyway, another recommendation with great tracks, outside of "movie directors" is The Soprano's tv/cable series.

This is one of my favorite soundtracks. It was part of my family LP collection as a kid.
Thomas Newman

His tear pulling composition from one of the best movies of all time American Beauty is remarkable.

I'm not familar with the band. Why do you ask? Does it make me seem gay or something?
Huh?
Come on now.
I loved that song
It worked very well with the visuals too, good job editing whoever did it. Its basically the whole movie boiled to its core. Good song.
As for the genius that is Morricone... more than once I have used "The Ecstasy of Gold" to inspire me to write... and in the movie I'm writing for Hector (about Mexican Wrestlers from the golden Age of Mexican Wrestling, plus some supernatural indiana-jonesy stuff), we're using "The Garden of Delights" on the opening credits. Hector is confident he can get the rights to it, we shall see... I'm crossing my fingers. Here it is:
Morricone is a genius.
Italians are good for three things.

Another worthy mention is Darren Aronofsky with Clint Mansell.
Library
Looking for "directors" with a history of great composer choices.
Now, if we are talking great composers with a history or with a great library of films that is another poll :)
JW
John Williams consistently brings out the best scores for SPIELBERG. Their collaboration is epic and unending. With the sole exception being COLOR PURPLE, they've done every feature together.
