MY WEEKEND: Saving The World

videowilliams's picture

OK, I'm in earnest mode. So sue me. If JM can write a stream-of-consciousness blog about her weekend that compels attention just because we know her and she happens to write beautifully, so can I...

Folks, my big event of yesterday was shooting Senator John Coulter, former head of the Australian Democrats Party and the President of Sustainable Population Australia, as he discussed the future of humanity, the follies of our government, and the imminent dangers of population growth.

It felt funny to have a man who I've been watching on TV for most of my life (he was a senator for decades) looking to me after each take and asking "All right?" But so it was. He was a fascinating man, a brilliant speaker, and a real nice guy to boot. He took me aside after the shoot to ask advice on making videos at home, because he wants to make short films to get his political views across, now that he's retired from the Senate.

I asked him if he felt frustrated by his time in government, since clearly he didn't achieve all the things he'd wanted to for the environment. He looked me in the eye and said "David, that's exactly what I said in my retirement speech to the House. I've failed. I don't think I achieved a thing."

It occurs to me now that as a fan of Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth", Senator Coulter is probably thinking "I should do something like that myself! I should use film & video to get my message straight to the people. It worked for Al..." This man is 77 years old. Which says you're never too old to discover the magic of film.

He suggested using his contacts to get parliamentary footage of our politicians spouting all the rubbish that has put us in this mess, which I can use in our production. I said "Great! That's going to really lift this project to another level." Tonight I'm checking the footage I took of him. Now I don't know if this is leading anywhere commercial, but it is about saving the planet, so I do feel good about it.

...Opinions, anyone?

You go with your bad ass self ;-)

That's really awesome about John Coulter discovering the power of film, after years of feeling like he was spinning his wheels in a bloated government bureaucracy. I don't know much about Australian politics, but govenments tend to be that way.

To be so inspired to change his tactics at 77 is itself inspiring. Methods for influencing our world can come from all kinds of different places. There are so many limitations to politics.

I made a similar point to Marco in a comment on my blog "It's Hot Already" when he mentioned he'd love to see Al Gore run for the Presidency: I really believe Al Gore is more powerful doing what he's been doing since he left public service. This is true with his impact in my life.

I love that you're involved in such an important project with an influential man. That's wonderful and amazing. Goodluck with that! I hope your production is able to touch hearts and minds.

Dave & Dawn....no sex? what's the dilliyo?

I play.  Seriously.

Dave I posted a comment (I've been at it for a while now) to your comment on JMs blog, concerning this very subject.

It is very serious.  People are just too unconcern about  the environment.

Only those of us who couldn't give a shit about being call "tree-lickers" are out here giving a damn.  And that sad to say, is no where near enough.

Dave I am so proud to know you.  A freak, who also cares about the environment.  hmmmmm What A Man.

oh, yes, and...

I hope your project also motivates people into action.

These issues are close to my heart, as you know.

Dave, how can we help??

Dave, you're right about this not being a commercial project, but...... what a cause!

We are filmmakers, we have the power of shaping a message in the best media known to man yet,.. and there are few messages more important than this. How can we help? If you think there is anything this community could do, I say this is definitely a project I'd love us all to be part of. Think about it, think if there is anything...... its a very worthy cause. My respects for helping that senator... it does help to save the world.

We're at your disposal Dave, just say the word. . Maybe we're small for now, but whatever we can help.

Spitballing

Dawn...

Months ago, I had the same thought as you about Al Gore: his movie's done more to raise consciousness- and motivate action- than 8 years as Clinton's Vice President. Aussie politics is much the same as American. More rough-n-tumble, but just as beholden to big business interests, and difficult to move.

You write so well, the points you make are so all around right, that it's a challenge to think of anything to add. Oh, how I'd love to get you into this project somewhere! It would reinforce the international nature of the issue. You could speak from California- from Ground Zero of the human population growth experiment. You'd be speaking from the heart, you'd speak with intellect and passion. And people would listen.

Especially if you did it naked.

...Happy, Jackie?

STALLION's picture

Dave asks: ...Happy, Jackie? Jackie Answers:

 That's a good start Dave.

...but it has been a while since I heard from the two of you.  And I don't think I've seen the equal sign from you at all, except for today in that acronym (RTFM).

Marco, I'm so glad to have your support! There's some serious firepower here. Not quite sure where this project is going as yet, but I'll keep you and KC informed.

Jackie, I love the term "tree-lickers!"

Patience, Jackie!

"Men are like rubber bands. When they pull away, they can stretch only so far before they come springing back."

Dave & Dawn & 7:14 pm!

I'm very patient.  I am the most patientest!

why that's very flattering

Thank you, Dave, for the compliment to my writing and desiring to include me in such an important project. I would love to do it.

And, if I thought the world would listen with a greater open mind and with more motivation in their hearts, I would totally do it naked.

Stallion, get your mind out of the gutter. Dawn and I are busy saving the planet this week!

STALLION's picture

7:23 pm! I'm just saying...

Reply To:  "Stallion, get your mind out of the gutter."

My mind is no where near the gutter.  Sex in the gutter...naw, wouldn't work.

That's not where  you take girls...to the gutter...is it Dave?

rubber bands sometimes break

Like Dave said Stallion...when men pull away...

We'll see when (and if) he snaps back....

Hopefully I'll be around for that....never take any thing for granted.

videowilliams's picture

Oh man...

Life is so complicated.

videowilliams's picture

Good point, Stallion

I wonder where that expression started? You're right- it makes no sense at all!

I take girls- um- to my massive 38th floor penthouse apartment overlooking Sydney Harbour.

In my dreams.

cici's picture

Dave! Feels great to read your post!

How empowering!

You fill me with hope!

Go on and change the world!  You RAWK!

:-)

We know you're just doing it to impress Dawn, anyways.

;-P

videowilliams's picture

Copycat

No cici, YOU rawk (and did I also mention you're hawt?) because today...

I GOT MY COPY OF THAT SHOW YOU'VE ALL BEEN TALKING ABOUT! NOW AT LAST I CAN JOIN IN ON THE DISCUSSION!

Thank you, cic', for sending it. You've linked me back into the world. I will be watching it very shortly. Opinions to come...

Now it's funny you should comment that I'm only going green to impress our favourite writer-actress. It reminds me of a plotline in the medical drama series I used to write for.

We'd decided one of the doctors in our practice should get drawn into the environmental movement by a hardcore greenie patient, but the plot just wasn't working. It was out of character for him: out of the blue he suddenly cared? It didn't make sense. Then the director suggested "What if we make the greenie an attractive woman?" Boom. It worked. Of course he'd care! Of course he'd wanna go out and lick trees! They cast this pretty blonde in the role and there was chemistry. Humour too.

But do you really think I'd be that shallow? Sheesh.

STALLION's picture

"Of course he'd wanna go out and lick trees!"

I love SNL.  I love Molly Shannon.  I know you've seen her skit.  Hilarious.  That's where the "tree-lickers" comes from.

Speaking of tree-lickers, does anyone know whatever happen to the girl who was protesting and living in a tree out in California somewhere.  I often wondered what happened with that, and where is she now?

This post is reminding me of one of my favorite poems, here it go

Trees

I think that I shall never see *A poem lovely as a tree. *A tree whose hungry mouth is prest*Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;* A tree that looks at God all day, *And lifts her leafy arms to pray; *A tree that may in Summer wear* A nest of robins in her hair;* Upon whose bosom snow has lain;* Who intimately lives with rain.* Poems are made by fools like me,* But only God can make a tree.* -- Joyce Kilmer**

videowilliams's picture

Tree Licking

Now that is a beautiful poem! Do you know, I'd never seen the entire thing? I only knew the opening line from Superman II: it comes up on a crystal when Lex Luthor visits the Fortress of Solitude. Thanks for that, Jackie: I'll never accuse you of "mind in the gutter" again.

Actually, I haven't seen the SNL tree-licking sketch, but I have seen that tree-sitting girl. She appeared in the news not so long ago, after someone had vandalised Luna, the tree she had lived in for months. She cried and hugged it- but she didn't go the tongue, at least not on camera. Perhaps the French kissing came later.

DawnAkemi's picture

Arbor Day

I love that poem too!

When I was in grade school, every year we planted a tree for Arbor Day and all us kids would recite the poem in unison.

Funny thing though...this couplet was cut out:

*A tree whose hungry mouth is prest* Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

I never knew that until now.

My goodness...such silliness...and here I thought I grew up during the freewheeling sexual revolution. Laughing

videowilliams's picture

Puritans

...As if all you kids hadn't done that with your own mothers! You're right, Dawn, that's just silliness.

Back when the impeachment trial against Bill Clinton was getting hot and heavy, and all these serious reporters, filmed by people like cici, flooded our screens discussing whether or not the president got a blow job in his office- as if JFK hadn't done the same, and as if that hadn't always been a perk of high office- we Australians scratched our heads and said:

"Aren't you glad we got the convicts and they got the Puritans?"

videowilliams's picture

Overpopulation Poster

What an offer, shyam! If we do need a poster, you'll be the first to know. We already have a tag line:

GROWING... GROWING... GONE

I thought the poster for "An Inconvenient Truth" was brilliant: the smoke from industrial chimneys twisting into a hurricane. I wonder what image would sum this one up?

videowilliams's picture

One Of Us Has To Die

Just to let the folks at home know how uncannily alike our thinking is, earlier today I thought I ought to send shyam a catchup email. When I got home, he'd sent me one. At the moment shyam was writing "did you get my mail?" above, I was sending him a KC message saying "I got your mail."

This is too weird. I think that one of us is going to have to die.
