REMINISCENCE: My MillenniumOnce in a thousand years do we see the turn of a millennium. You have heard what it was like in Washington (see cici's blog)- well, here's what it was like for me... Where were you at 12:00 midnight December 31st, 1999? Me, the streets of Sydney, and the first awesome moment I remember was coming into Sydney Cove on the Neutral Bay Ferry, past the crowd at the Opera House, who put up a massive cheer and a Mexican Wave which followed us all the way into the Quay. My friend Graham and I were at the prow of the vessel- it felt like this all was for us! Julius Caesar could not have felt prouder in the victory procession through Rome after conquering Britain! But the greatest moment of all, for me, was the few seconds just before midnight: the harbour was full of boats, a ring of helicopters were throbbing overhead, and they were bearing down toward us through the spotlights spearing upward from the Opera House, itself a glowing blue, with flashbulbs glittering round the harbourfront, a million voices cheering, and I really felt my childhood dream of living in a science fiction film had come to pass- it was unearthly- I was looking at the climax of the 20th Century, not quite sure what world we'd all be entering at midnight, but already old reality was gone. All of a sudden, the crowds' cheering rose to a roar, then a few seconds later the fireworks lit up the sky. Here we were in the 21st Century- deafening, huge and spectacular- yet real... and it just somehow wasn't as good as the fantasy moment just past. Thats a beautiful moment.
Thats a beautiful moment. I think, the year 2000, I figured it wasnt the start of the new milenium, because if a decade starts with 1 and ends in 10, a millenium starts with 1 and ends in 1000. So technically, the year 2000 was the -last- year of the old milenium, not the first year of the new one.
Anyway, thats what I said to myself to rationalize why I missed the biggest party on earth :) I remember watching the fireworks out the window, and talking in a chatroom to the woman who would eventually become my wife... she was far away in the philippines then, I was in mexico.
The next year, we were together in an apartment in Queens, NY, and the first year of the new milenium, 2001, we saw the big ball break on Times Square. It was beautiful.

You met your future wife
You met your future wife on-line by chatting across the Pacific? Wow! That's a very big thought to absorb... I was thinking that internet chatrooms were nothing but time-killing fun!
Anyway, it sounds like you were making a good investment in your future that New Year's Eve.
Yeah.... its a long
Yeah.... its a long story... basically I had posted a poem or something to some board I cant even remember now, talking about soulmates and such. She emailed me because she couldnt believe someone could be that naive to look for love online.
Guess who won that argument? :)

That's a great story,
That's a lovely story, Dave. For some reason, it made me think of when I ran the Honolulu Marathon (talk about free association). Perhaps I'll post a blog. We could all riff stories off each other.
I adore you guys. :-*
Marco, GASP! (clutching chest) What a romantic story! You are right about the new millenium starting at 2001. It is so fitting that you spent that moment in Times Square with your wife!
Dave, your writing is just so good. You placed me in Sydney. How fun that must have been to witness.
Dawn, free-association story riffing! What a great idea!! I really want to hear about your Marathon!
I adore all three of you!
Aww, thank you Cici! We
Aww, thank you Cici! We wuv you too :) And yeah, .... I loved that moment, because it felt like we had -arrived-.. you know what I mean? We had spent all of september in manila getting to know each other, then october and november in mexico wondering how to pay huge debts we got into to get married, december in manhattan finding a job... it was a nice moment :)
And yeah, Dave's an amazing writer, I so read every blog post right off the press with him.

Marco.....you should write
Marco.....you should write out your beautiful, romantic (and free associative) story as a blog....
Here I am...pain in the ass again!
Marco, I edited the below comment and it shifted to the top of the thread.....fyi
I see it Dawn... but then
I see it Dawn... but then look, I edited my comment too, and I stayed in place!
I think its due to the threaded/flatlist styles.... here's what I'm gonna do: I'm gonna make us all go flat list, and remove the "reply" button. That should make things uniform! Working on it :)

Freedom At Last
Sounds like we've all got some great blogs coming, now that the rule book's been torn up. Ah, the taste of creative freedom! It's as fresh as mountain air... mixed in with bourbon and cigarette smoke.
I can't tell you guys what a thrill it is to have such a bunch of appreciative readers! Well, OK, I guess I just did.
Post-Modern Socializing
You're right in all your observations, Eric- I'm Dave or David, by the way- the ability to do this is certainly one of the brand new phenomena of the 21st Century. The irony is that while I've been sharing some of the most intimate details of my life with people on the other side of the world, and hearing theirs, I don't even know my neighbours' names in the apartment block where I live! It's all very post-modern...
No excuses, huh?
But writing's hard! It hurts my brain! My computer's slow. My house needs cleaning. Work keeps getting in the way...
*sigh*
I know you're right, of course, shyam. There are no excuses.
Hey, thanks for reading!
And Jessie-poo
is reading again...wheee... ouch- I just hit my head on the ceiling.
