I found this while trying to find contact info on a site I'm needing to contact, but didn't have any info published. While there, I checked out KarmaCritic because I thought it might be amusing to see what our "sale value" would be. haha

This way to Necrotopia

Hey guys.

I want you to see what we've been working at for the past... oh, I dunno, how many months has it been, EZ? At least 6. A lot. A long time.

It takes a while to find a place in the vast fog of imagination, stick your hand in it, fish for and grab stuff, compact it into a little ball and yank it back out into our realm of reality. So far, we've yanked a website, a 16-page full color comic book, two teaser videos, nine character bios, a little brochure describing the world (a "feelie" in the purest Alan Moore style), a 96-page graphic novel script, a wiki-style framework for keeping my shit straight when I write in the future, forums, and... I'm probably forgetting stuff.

But I'm very proud to show this to you guys. Everything I described above is here, except for the 96-page script, and one of the two videos (I may post it later here in KC). Please give it a whirl, and let me know if anything seems broken:

http://www.theunnaturals.com

Thanks so much for beta-testing this, guys, I understand our producer is showing this to some pretty high-up people right about now, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Robert Lawrence is a GOOD producer to have, people.

I want to give a huge thank you to Hector, who made the beautiful artwork you're about to see. He has been my best friend since childhood... I'm lucky to be able to say that, specially to be able to say that about him. He and I are going to do a lot of stuff together in the future, Xenu-willing.

And of course, thanks to Ezequiel. He opened the door for me, all I had to do was be serious about my ambition, and I am, and he opened the door. EZ, this would have never gotten this far without you man. I also hope to be doing a lot of stuff with you in the future, Xenu or not.

Alright. Have fun everybody, hope you like this.

Gorgeous Vimeo now available!

Just a small update, thanks to Captain Xarach and the Very Talented Mr. Barnett, we've discovered the joys of Vimeo, a provider so nice it gives you HD.

Vimeo is now added as an official video provider for KC, (I got a developer's API key and everything) and we should be able to see thumbnails for it and the whole gig. Very nice. Just enter the URL for your Vimeo flick, no need to copy paste the entire embed code, and it should work, give it a try!

That's all, enjoy the rest of your day, I only stole 30 seconds of it! :)

Tonight on KarmaRadio: Movie News

Robert McKee says creativity is born out of limitation and restriction. Tonight our restriction is a having no guest. Creativity two weeks ago was to turn it into movie-review night, and it turned out great! Creativity tonight is to make a panel about movie news. Lets see how it turns out! It depends on you all, loyal karmapirates, to call in and make the usual chaos we love so much :)

So tonight is Movie News night. Its really simple, (and a lot of talk-shows do this every day) we just take one news item at a time and comment on it, pirate style.

Tonights topics come from http://news.google.com/?topic=e and there are:

Official Invitation for our Next KarmaCritic Contest

Alright good people, here's the deal!

Our next contest begins tomorrow!

Our contest in plainspeak and quickiexplained: phase 1 is about "who can write the best script in a given genre and theme" while phase 2 is about "who can actually shoot the best film based on that winning script from phase 1". Everyone votes everywhere. At the end we put all films and scripts together (as well as behind-the-scenes footage, interviews and other extras) inside a well-made DVD, and we try to sell it. Profits will be split amongst everyone, larger shares to the winners.

Now the details:

PHASE 1

Phase 1 of the show is a writing contest. All KarmaCritters are welcome, and its free to become a KarmaCritter. You may submit as many scripts as you want, provided they meet the following criteria:

Genre must be HORROR-COMEDY (gotta be scary, gotta be funny)

Theme must be "Practice Makes Perfect".

Lenght must be 7 to 13 pages (not counting cover).

Finished script must be submitted to KC before Christmas day 2007.

Points number 1 and 2 are at my discretion, points 3 and 4 are pretty objective.

Now, the following is not mandatory, but just friendly advice: keep in mind you're writing potentially for a short film with a 250 dollar production budget cap. Let this knowledge help you drive your choices regarding setting, number of actors, FXs, etc.

The winning script is announced on Christmas day, and becomes the cornerstone of phase 2.

All 10 finalists must record 3-minute interviews (Questionarie will be provided, background is green-screen).

PHASE 2

Once again, everyone is welcome to submit an entry. The requirements:

Must be based on the script that wins phase 1.

Must be produced with no more than 250 dollars (not including film equipment; keep your receipts!)

Must be between 7 and 13 minutes long.

Finished film must be submitted to KC before March 1st 2008

Must include 7 to 13 minutes of Behind-The-Scenes footage

Once again, points 1 and 2 are subjective to my discretion (I reserve the right to request copies of your receipts if a dispute ensues), while 3, 4 and 5 are pretty objective.

The winning film is announced on March 1st!

All 10 finalists must record 3-minute interviews too (see phase 1).

NOTES ON BOTH PHASES

To submit, simply upload your PDF script as usual, but write in the description that this is an entry for the contest, I'll take care of the rest.

As with SUBLIM, as soon as an entry is submitted it becomes eligible for votes; so the early birds do have an advantage (Ex. a script submitted on the bleeding edge of the deadline on Dec 24 technically is eligible, but will it have enough time to gather votes and become a finalist?)

The finalists are the top 10 entries with the most votes AND an average score of 70 or better. Each phase has its own 10 finalists.

All finalists will be featured in the DVD and share in profits from it (more details below).

Copyright over their own work always remains the property of the contestant who submits it, but KC will have the right to compile and sell this work in a DVD, for which you'll receive a percentage of the profits. Portions of your work may also be used in promotional materials.

DISTRIBUTION AND PROFIT SHARING

We dont yet know who will replicate the DVDs and at what cost, but we know how the unitary price breaks down:

Unitary Price = Replication Cost + Distribution Cost + Profit. In other words, when we sell a DVD, first we substract what it costed to copy the DVD, then what it costed to distribute it, and the rest is our Profit. Said Profit is split as follows:

10% to Eric Bumpus for Production work (which includes dealing with replicator, distributor, creating DVD menus, editing, titling of interviews, subtitles, etc).

10% to the winner of Phase 1.

40% to the winner of Phase 2.

1% to each of the 9 non-winning finalists of Phase 1

3% to each of the 9 non-winning finalists of Phase 2

4% for publicity and promotion of future contests

Profit shares will be sent by Eric in the frequency that makes the most sense. This will be determined once replication and distribution details are known. Most likely we'll use PayPal.

TITLE AND IMAGERY

Working on both as we speak!! Go vote!

Any questions? Please ask away, lets hammer out anything that's pending with the info that is known!

Tomorrow monday.... We Begin Writing!! Remember: Horror-Comedy with the theme "Practice Makes Perfect"! Best of luck everyone! Stay tuned for a contest page SUBLIM style tomorrow!

LOOP After Party

Here's my coverage of the party that followed Pericles' LOOP premiere at the FAIF Festival two weeks ago in Anaheim, California. Which became a happy reunion for several Karmacritters who'd only met on-line.

It's a chance for you to see the famous Dawn Sandwich (as featured in cici's "I posted some pics of our KC gang" blog), my infamous wandering windsock, and cici in action as a photographer. It also comprises the final chapter of my yet-to-be-edited US Travelogue. I've returned with 14 hours of material from a 6 week coast-to-coast trip, so there's certainly some cutting in my future! One part down, about a dozen more to go...

Filmmaker's notes: This is really just an edited home movie, shot in unusually low light, but I have done the best I can. I put it together in a sweet and sentimental, old-fashioned style 'cos hey, that's how I feel about it. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

YouTube Directing Contest: Lets Do This

Hey, who's up for this??

Take it away Jason Reitman:

If we enter this together, we'd support one another! Who's up for this? It doesnt seem -too- hard, right? I for one, will write and publish here in Karma a script that meets the three requirements... real soon-like. Anybody who wishes to shoot my script will be welcome to and it'd be an honor.

If you want -in- this thing, and can't shoot (for any reason) then like me, write a script!

If you want -in-and can shoot, then just read the scripts from the community, pick one you like and go to town baby!

I will file together all the scripts and films we make for this in a new section. Can you imagine the kind of splash we would make if we pull together for this one and place in the top 20, or jeez, if one of us wins??

Submissions end Nov 9; we got less than 20 days, but its no harder than one of those grueling 48 hour contest some of us are veterans of.. So I need to finish my script within 5 days or so, to give someone time to shoot it. For more details, see:

http://youtube.com/projectdirect

So who's in?? Post! Tell us if you're writing a script, or if you're shopping for one to shoot, and if so, by when do you need the script finished.

Lets Do This!!

Like a Major Company

I would like Karmacritic working like a major company (or just a company)

to promote, work, and help in wathever way for the projects we are developing in association with

I want to make a premier screening of "On-Off" here at Karmacritic, of course we have to select one day for the screening

and it must be just one day and then I have to delete the entry

becouse of many Festivals (they don´t want your film at internet, they want a premiere)

recently I filmed the exteriors of On-Off

and soon it would be ready just two days more to finish the filmming

and postproduction could take just some weeks

today I will upload a new sequence

with the music spirit I want for the movie, the musicians still are working in this...

let´s try to get the upload even when I have no the rigths from the music I show like the sample I need for two parts of the short movie

cheers karmacriters

Radio Archive Page, and other changes

Our first radio show was a fun thing, and there's lots to improve but it had a LOT more audience than I expected, and I love seeing the interest it has aroused here in the site :)

So now we have a new section for it, http://www.karmacritic.com/radio/arc... , its the second item in the menu bar under the header, and its also a block right underneath "The Film of the Day". Whoah, wait, what is this 'film of the day' business, you say?

Well, as I added another block to the left bar for the latest radio broadcast, I couldnt help but notice how big it was growing. I also noticed that the seven random films from the library were taking a lot of prime real estate on the screen, and I didnt notice anyone leaving comments on them. So I decided to replace them with the "Film of the Day", which is completely random, and it changes once a day! Lets see how that works :)

So anyway, there you have it, you should be able to listen to the latest broadcast from right here, and rate it and leave comments right here also.

We'll see how our second show goes!

Thank you so much to EVERYONE for the support, it feels great to have everyone pitch in various ways to make this happen! Thats what a community is all about!

As always, we welcome all kinds of feedback!
