SYNOPSIS

After
the loss of her daughter and her husband in a car accident, Geena
Howard attempts to live a normal life again, with the help of her
friend Katherine. When Alain Dubois, a French journalist suffering from
amnesia, informs Geena that her daughter Rebecca is being held captive
by a mysterious organization, Geena regains hope and decides to work
with the journalist to find her daughter. They discover that Rebecca is
the object of a major deal in connection with a rich German
businessman, Breitner, and his little girl, Marlene, who is seriously
ill. But as the research intensifies, Geena starts to question Alain's
true intentions and suspects him to be a part of the organization.
Despite her suspicions, she continues to work with the only man capable
of saving her daughter's life.
A new project: BLACK FANTOM

Hector gave me green light to brag about this, so brag I will!

After our first project together FURIA, which is doing really well (but I'll let Hector share those news, he deserves the right to brag about those), we got started on a second project, which will likely be financed the same way, but this is not animation, but Live Action.

Its a wrestlers movie :)

In Mexico, masked wrestlers are what cowboys represent in the US, or kung fu masters in Hong Kong. There's a whole genre of masked wrestlers being champions of the people, superheroes, always defeating some nefarious plot. The movies are CHEESY as hell, but people love them just like that. And Hector and I have decided to create a movie that pays homage to the whole genre, just like KILL BILL was Tarantino's ode to the Hong Kong martial arts flicks.

Our movie is called BLACK FANTOM VS THE DEVOURER OF WORLDS.

Actually, I'm just the humble writer, Hector, as with FURIA, is the real engine moving this project from the realm of dreams and ideas, into the realm of business deals and contracts and money and getting things made. But he and I enjoyed a long evening of brainstoming dreams and ideas back in Mexico, and we'd like to share some of the artwork inspired so far.

Without further Ado, a sneak peak at some of the concept art for BLACK FANTOM:

Smokin' Aces

EvilDirector's Cynical Review of "Smokin Aces"

*** out of ****

"Wow, that's fantastic, man. You have the wisdom of a six or seven thousand year old man. That's fantastic; we don't have to fill up the whole blackboard after all."

When I saw the trailers for "Smokin Aces", I couldn't help but grin in anticipation while, at the same time, mentally filing the film under the heading "Retarded, but Enjoyable". A few well-beloved movies languish in that mental drawer, including the craptastic and completely watchable "Starship Troopers" and the campy trash that is "Point Break"; these films are totally undefendable as pieces of "art", and yet I still find myself hauling them down from the shelf every month or so. I can't resist the siren call of Keanu Reeves sky-diving pre-Neo, or seeing Dina Meyer naked. Joe Carnahan's latest offering is perfectly at home in the "R but E" drawer, but just barely; quite frankly, at times, it's just too good to qualify as a guilty pleasure. It also wins the ED Award for Best Use of Ben Affleck's Face.
The setup is simple: Buddy "Aces" Isreal (Jeremy Piven) is a Sinatra-like Vegas showmen who's gotten in trouble with the mob, and now wants to turn state's evidence. The FBI, led by Agent Locke (Andy Garcia) is looking to bring him in safely into the Witness Protection Program, while at least two, if not more, branches of the Mob are looking to put, in one character's words, "...boxes of bullets" into the guy post-haste. There's more, of course, including a nice little double (or is it triple?)cross by Israel, and something about an undercover agent from the Ness-era. Honestly, it's all a smoke screen anyway, just lead-in to the promised blood-bath.
What I love about this film is the quality of the dialogue and the outstanding way it is performed. It's clever and witty, it's natural, and it manages to cover up the fact that there is less script here than you can find in a freshman film student's first treatment. For a film that advertises non-stop action, I found it surprising that nearly the first hour is spent entirely in dialogue, with the single caveat of a couple of Neo-Nazi's offing Ben Affleck, always a plus in my book. Just as surprising is the fact that I didn't mind the time. Some of Jeremy Piven's bits of dialogue as Israel are inspired, pure bulletin-board material, and as a guy who loves clever word-play, I dug the unexpected hour the film spent developing the characters and the inspiration for each and every wacky and kooky player. I'm tempted to suspect that "Smokin' Aces" might have been rejected by American audiences because it promised mindless action and it actually delivered a superior product fueled more by dialogue and performance than thrills.
Honestly, though, this isn't a historical epic, and I'm not exactly crying out for a director's cut with more character moments; I think the film treads the line nicely between development and over-development, letting us enjoy the final fire-fight without having to wonder who is who, or why they are doing what they are doing. In fact, the film only stumbles with the big reveal, which some folks will see coming a mile away and others will scratch their heads over. For the latter, don't worry, since I have a solution, complete with Mafia goombah accent: fohget about it.
I can't help but admire the time and skill it must have taken to actually film this action spectacle. It's faux-chaotic, similar to Paul Walker's recent star-vehicle "Running Scared"; it's so all-over the place, but the chaos is so...orchestrated, that you can't help but realize the effort it takes to achieve the overall effect. For instance, and the film teacher in me almost cringes at making this connection, "Smokin' Aces" actually perfects a technique "Citizen Kane" used over half a century ago. Yes, you read that right: I just put one of, if not the, top film of all time, in the same sentence as "Smokin' Aces". Hopefully, lightning will not strike me down, and confidence is high that I could outrun Orson Welles' ghost should it finish rolling in it's grave and come looking for revenge. The technique I'm talking about, specifically, is the audio transitions that Welles used to move from one scene to another, at some times, in "Citizen Kane"; think young Kane saying, "Merry Christmas..." and the banker finishing the phrase with, "...and a Happy New Year!" with hardly a second passing in the interim. "Smokin' Aces" very cleverly sets up most of the first twenty minutes of the film by transitioning using this device, and, for me, it works really well.
I can see I've gone almost this entire review without mentioning Ryan Reynolds and Ray Liotta's nice turns as agents and partners with the FBI, or Alicia Key's inauguration into the film ranks, or even the quality of the action that sold the film to audiences in the first place. Since we're on the subject, I'll say this about the action: it's loud, powerful, and sustained when the excrement hits the rotary device, and provides the advertised thrills, especially an almost split-second elevator standoff. On the downside, some of the broad and wacky folks who populate this film are a little too over-the-top, including the white trash family that enters the picture right as we should be focusing on the forthcoming shooting spree. Still, I'll suffer through half a dozen weird white kids for one scene of Israel talking about the value of illusion, or the Spanish Mercenary easing a victim into the next life by urging him to close his eyes. In fact, the biggest drawback to the film is that, when it ends, you find yourself wondering why such a good film is so empty at the close...you expect action flicks to have little to no purpose, but to discover that a good film really is about nothing but a gunfight kinda hurts when you leave the theatre.
In the end, "Smokin' Aces" is a top-flight piece of trash, and I mean that in the very best of ways. The performances are all broad and memorable, the action is adrenaline-fueled, and the dialogue is sharp and tight.

****- Perfect in Execution, Riveting, and Bound to Be A Classic

*** 1/2- Nearly Perfect, Riveting

***- Flawed in Some Manner, But Overall well Made, Entertaining

** 1/2- Flawed, Entertaining on a Guilty-Pleasure Level

**- More Flawed Then Not, Only Occasionally Entertaining

* - Completely Flawed, Never Entertaining

This had a lot of potential, unfortunately we didnt get it into festivals like we should've. Mike Dobson's cartoon is amazing though and is now available on You Tube and MySpace, it's no longer titled Carnage, now titled Siobhan. He's an amazingly talented animator. I was Production Manager/Editor on this and it was a big workout for mildly small budget project. Learned a lot on this film.

Hot Fuzz

This is to buddy cop action movies what Scream was to horror movies! Freakin fantastic! Another brilliant story by this filmmaking "family" that drives along trying to go the opposite direction of all other buddy cop action flicks only to slingshot you right back into those films at a laugh per minute.

This is the definitive spoof on traditional action cop films without actually being a spoof. The comedy is quick so if you're not paying attention it can pass you by. The way they slip things in at a milliseconds time just makes you laugh more once you've caught up with them. The fact that they surround the comedy with such serious story telling about the crimes taking place throughout the movie just rocks.

And of course the gore is just appallingly hilarious.
