Disavowing Jurisprudence

When things move again, they move fast and mightily. On my plate already is post production on a quick green screen short I tossed together this past Thursday night. I wanted to make a commentary on the ever giant Wal-Mart and the media. I was greatly inspired by seeing a TV “news” segment that was glorifying and miraculously sponsored by a hospital during the 11:00 O’clock media coverage that used to be called journalism. This cynicism and sick sense of humor keyed off a new bit. I wrote it quick and called in some actors.

Today I shot the background plate for one section of this bit. My Sexy Fiancé Veronica ™ has been tinkering with IN THE TRENCHES OF AN INDIE FILM documentary relentlessly since the screening a little over a week ago. She wanted to re-order all the scenes to make it flow better, plus we really agreed with most criticism from the screening which was that the Fly-On-The-Wall B-Roll segments were too long. They cause the overall pacing to drag and people lose interest. I think these sections could be equally effective in less than half the time.

The other thing needed was more on Post Production. I short-changed the entire process in the documentary that played. It was 3 minutes of montage with a quickie voice over to cover the entirety of post. Now we took some of the existing “educational” web docs and fashioned them into the movie proper. Sections on ADR, M&E Tracks, and why & how we deleted scenes fit into the scheme. The actual “editing” process is still skipped a bit, but on a DVD I can use the WebDocs of editing as bonus features.

Speaking of which, the goal is to sell DVD’s of this documentary and DVD as an educational tool. Many people who want to get into making a feature length film can get in depth with the process and really feel what it’s like to take the plunge. Creative and practical decisions with footage make for a demonstrative movie at a budget level more people can relate to as opposed to the huge multi-million dollar productions that are beyond more people’s grasp.

The final touches and clean ups for My Sexy Fiancé Veronica ™’s edit are completed and we’re about to start the encoding for DVD process later tonight. Last night I worked on the DVD art and setting up the distribution with Amazon.com. My goal of 90 minutes has been met, and we’re even 3 minutes shorter than what played barely over a week ago at the Cowtown Film Series, and that’s with 14 minutes of new material ADDED to the movie. It’s another feature I produced, and that’s a goal met.

On the downside, I reviewed footage from much earlier in the year. I had always intended to do this short film but since it relied on snow, it was incredibly difficult to put together. I gave someone a shot at D.P. and after supervising the first few shots I gave over the reins and focused on working with my 7 year old actor. I digitized the footage shortly after that and was disappointed, but didn’t feel rushed to edit this piece. As we enter winter I wanted to re-examine it after not seeing a frame for months. Looking at it now, the footage was not as bad as I remember, but it still falls very far below the standards I am setting for myself for the future.

This puts me in a quandary. I will absolutely not use a frame of this footage and if this short is to be resurrected, it will be re-shot entirely. The stars may not ever align to make this happen again, but I would rather not release anything that is below my current standard of quality. I have to tell my nephew that this piece will never be done. That is not something I look forward to, but I can’t do it. I don’t even have enough footage to cut something together just for him. I don’t blame the D.P., as it was my shoot and making sure the shots I want are there is my job, no one else’s. Let’s just say that my trust of camerapersons understanding me has gone down. I will be absolutely sure I’m getting what I want for all my projects. This is a stinging reminder of my role with the camera as a director.

I’m hoping to get a sole music cue for my new little greenscreen experiment, and I have to create some graphics, plus key in the back ground and I will have a new piece on the market by the end of the week, if not sooner. I love having a greenscreen and studio I can just walk into and shoot on next to my edit suite. I don’t want to take these things for granted and not only let them inspire my creativity, but I need to ACT on these inspirations.

I love being burned in the flames of inspiration right now. 2009 looks to be quite a kick ass year; recession be damned. This year, I defeated my enemies, drank their blood, and sang the songs of victory to the lamentation of their women and children. Next year I conquer more worthy foes and loftier goals. My banner is raised, as are my standards. Let’s just watch as it all unfolds.

Is there anything more glorius than a bloodthirsty pirate captain? AHOY! There be wind at our sails, matey!

VOAT: New Game Plan

Alright, I thank everyone for their feedback in my previous "game changer" post.

I consulted with the pillow (who sounded a lot like Billy Dee Williams ("Family Guy" joke, if you don't get it you don't get it)) and here's the new game changer proposal:

We're going with a modified version of Plan B.

We're chucking out the door the "compare side by side" angle, and going instead for a "CREEPSHOW" angle, alas, KARMACREEPER 2008.

Technically its still "Variations on a Theme", where by "theme" we mean "horror-comedy" and/or "horrror".

Now, everyone who completes their short before May 15th, shall get DOUBLE share. Everyone else who completes after, or already had another short lying around before VOAT, gets SINGLE share.

The drop-dead deadline for all shorts shall be AUGUST 15th, thats a LOT of time, I think, but it still gives us a couple months for replication and distribution, and we'd try to release this product on OCT 31st, get it? KarmaCREEPER, Oct 31st? Good :)

Now, here's the lineup in no particular order, and my comments, one by one:

HELLION by Veenotph: on schedule and likely to win double share.

GETTING A HEAD IN THE BUSINESS by cpparker: on schedule and likely to win double share.

HOUSE OF SMOKING GUNS by captains Peceno and Xarach: on schedule and likely to win double share.

RUDOLF by yours truly: on schedule and likely to win double share.

CAMP MACHETE by captains Peceno and Xarach: I'd love for you guys to do this even if its as late as August, and for single share.

SOUVERNIR by BrendanMorrisey: man, would you agree to knock this out by August and get single share?

UNWRITTEN LAW, LAND OF WITCHES: EZ would you agree to put these (the 5 min versions) in the DVD for single shares?

ACES HIGH: Brian Ochab, same question?

UNWRITTEN LAW II: Tommy, would you agree to put this on the DVD for single share? (double if you're done by May 15th!)

CAMERA GUY by moi: unless someone thinks it utterly sucks (and please tell me if you think so) I'd love to have this on the DVD for single share.

[anything cool] by OuchMouth: OuchMouth, could you have a new horror-comedy short done by August? You get single share :)

CUTTING LOSE by SunnyDayJazz: Yeah!

Did I forget anyone? Brain is soft in the mornings, you gotta forgive me, just point it out in the comments. How does this sound? 12 shorts in a DVD, plus extras (interviews, scripts) sounds like something -I- would buy, in the horror-comedy genre.

We'll get some sort of creepy host to present the shorts one by one, kinda like TALES FROM THE CRYPT, and the baby is out on Halloween. Eric still gets 10% for DVD and administrative services, and certainly, we still need to figure out replication, marketing and distribution.... but we'll cross those bridges when we get there, sweaty, exhausted and bitter of life, around September.

So there you go. The effort placed into getting things done by May 15th pays off, but everyone still gets a chance to contribute something cool.

How does this sound?

BTW, its got to be simpler than this:

VOAT probable Game Changer: How are we doing?

Hey people!

Well, the original plan was as follows (names in no particular order):

CAMP MACHETE: Dxarach and MelioraEric

HELLION: OuchMouth and Veenotph

GETTING A HEAD IN THE BUSINESS: Cpparker and VictorPeceno

RUDOLF: BrendanMorrisey and moi.

Now, you noticed I bolded some names up there, those are the people that I know are working to make the film a reality. It doesnt mean the ones not underlined arent, it just means I havent seen blog posts about it, or the like.

So we have two choices at this point:

Choice A: Do we continue with the original plan, and count on the movies not currently bolded getting made, then release the DVD with 4 pairs of shorts?

Choice B: Or, do we throw away the "variations on a theme" idea, and simply make "The KarmaCritic DVD 2008", and throw other shorts in there, maybe HOUSE OF SMOKING GUNS, UNWRITTEN LAW (I and II), LAND OF THE WITCHES, CUTTING LOOSE, CAMERA GUY, SOUVERNIR, THE CALL, etc?

Pros of choice A is well, its the plan!

Pros of choice B is that it seems more "doable", though I could be wrong.

Another major difference: if we go with choice B, we basically chuck away the contest angle and just split profits equitatively per script/short.

I dont think one option would inherently have more sales than another, its just in how we market it. (OR, if option B has a shitload of shorts, then that may be more attractive to potential customers. Maybe). It also brings new problems: how do we determine if a short is good enough to make it into the DVD?

What do you think people?

I'd like to hear from Steve and Christine, since they have put effort in doing their part, and I feel queasy throwing a game-changer at you guys, it doesnt feel fair; and yet on the other hand, it feels even more unfair to not have a DVD at all, or one that has just four shorts in it.

And I'd like to hear from OuchMouth, Brendan, Peceno, and Dxarach, because if you guys tell us we'll definitely have the original VOAT assignment from you, then we don't need a game-changer after all and we just continue with option A.

So lets chat people, our ultimate goal is to get a DVD out there and make some money :)

Variations on a Theme - Lets make a DVD!

Btw, the title is tentative, if you can come up with something wittier than "Variations on a Theme", please do!!

As you've surely seen by now, the weekly poll is asking us to choose a favorite genre.

The next weekly poll will ask us to choose a particular theme within the genre (or for something really fun, a theme which mixes the first and second place genre choices, for example "Horror-Comedy").

And then Phase 1 of the contest begins. Phase 1 is "lets see who can write the best short script based on the winning theme". I'd like to give no more than 2 weeks for this, but at the same time, I'd like to see at least 10 entries. Does this sound reasonable?

On Week 3 we'll vote to decide which script wins. Thus ends Phase 1, with a nice radio party, as its quickly becoming tradition :)

Phase 2 is "lets see who can make the best film based on the winning script". For this I'd like to devote a month, but at the same time, I'd like at least 10 entries. Again, does this sound like too much to ask? If you think so, please give me feedback, we can always adjust.

And this is where the "Variations on a Theme" name comes in. You see, kinda like the earliest stage of Project Greenlight, we cinephiles will be able to deconstruct and really, really analyze what makes each director unique when we see them all working from the same script. The potential for cafe discussion is nearly endless, and so are the potential games. For example, should we post all 10 films without credits and then play a game of "match the movie to the director"? Something I learned from McKee is that creativity thrives under the pressure of restrictions. Its our limitations, not the lack of them, what makes us creative, what -forces- us to find new solutions and think outside the box. Working from the same script everyone else is working... is, at least in my eyes, a -delicious- challenge, an opportunity to show why my voice is unique, what makes me different, dare I say, what makes someone stand out. Its a competition as fair as a lab experiment. Heck, if OTL had forced contestants to all work from the same script, it would have been a lot more watchable.

And then of course, we vote and choose a winner. What an honor to be crowned best among your peers in this fair-and-square experiment. If needed, we could impose maximun budget caps to have an even even-er playing field?

Now the good part: we can gather all the scripts, and all the films, add 3-minute interviews with all the writers, and all the directors, audio commentary, .. and cram it all inside a smartly designed DVD.

Now who would buy 10 versions of the same film? Filmmakers would. Students of cinema, cinephiles, people who have taken our art beyond the level of entertainment and are looking to dissect it, to find the soul of the beast and cage it, at least from an academic point of view. I can see film schools using this DVD in class. I can see pundits citing the little "lab experiment" to validate their own conclusions on this or that.

Any profits the DVD makes, would go one fourth to whoever wins Phase 1 (the winning writer), one fourth to whoever wins Phase 2 (the winning director), and the rest in equal shares to all other contestants (writers and directors).

That is the basic idea. Now, what are your thoughts? Also, can I have at least 10 writers to commit to this, and 10 directors to commit to this? I only want to start spinning our wheels and going after this full speed if we have all the people we need. Please post back and tell us if you're willing to do this, as a writer, as a director, or both.

Lets do this!! I think it'll be fun, educational, and maybe profitable!

Congrats to Bixby for THE MAN FROM EARTH

With all the buzz about SUBLIM still in my head, I decided to look around the internet and see about Bixby's movie that came out today, THE MAN FROM EARTH.

I hear a lot of things in this general trend:

Comparisons to 12 ANGRY MEN

Statements that good movies are made with good stories, not necessarily explosions and special FXs

That Jerome Bixby was an understated genius

That THE MAN FROM EARTH is an instant cult movie, probably more.

I'm just going to post a link to the reviews from Amazon so far, so you can see for yourself:

http://www.amazon.com/review/product...

In fact, I want to copy paste a POINT/COUNTERPOINT kind of thing, the most in-depth review of all, vs the only, only negative one, and then see if you arrive to the same conclusion as I did:

POINT:

PositiveDude wrote:

The premise and setting for this film are wonderfully simple in an age
where few sci-fi movies are made which lack CGI of any kind. I know it
could be argued that this isn't sci-fi in the strictest sense, but it
my mind you can't fit it into any other genre.

Take eight academics, put them in a room and present them with an
intriguing question: could a caveman from the time of the Cro-Magnon
survive 14,000 years to the present day, and if he could, what would he
be like? What experiences would he have amassed in that time? Which
famous historical figures would he have met?

The story takes an intriguing turn when Professor John Oldman
begins to insist that he is that man, prompting a night of discussion
and soul searching as his friends struggle to find some way of
disproving the claim, in scientific, psychological and religious terms.

The acting in this movie is largely excellent and features several
faces I recognised. I personally didn't think anyone really let the
material down, and the dialog itself is the real high point, keeping me
glued to the screen for over an hour and still thinking about the
arguments made several days later. I really am inspired to seek out
more work by Jerome Bixby, though it seems I have previously seen some
of his work for the Star Trek franchise and not realised it.

My only real caveat is that despite the relatively simple setting
(the characters never leave a small rural cabin) the direction does at
times feature some fairly bizarre camera angles, which in my view don't
enhance the atmosphere but actually detract from it. But that said,
I've seen much worse in big screen movies and highly rated TV Shows.

This movie is a rare gem and should be seen by anyone who has an
inquisitive mind, an enthusiasm for science fiction, or is simply in
the mood for something different.

COUNTERPOINT

NegativeDudette wrote:

I am flabbergasted by the other reviews for this movie. The acting is
egregiously unconvincing, the plot line is minimal and forced and the
dialogue is predictable and painful. This is one of the worst movies I
have seen in a long while. Forget buying it; don't even waste your
bandwidth downloading it for free. BTW: The main character claims to
not only have studied under the Buddha but to be Jesus himself; even
worse than this are the other characters' reactions to this news.

p.s. I was forced to give the film at least 1 star to submit this review.

Are you thinking what I'm thinking, regarding the -reason why- Dudette didnt like MAN FROM EARTH? Maybe its the atheist in me being paranoid, but.... anyway.. Someone already replied to her:

COUNTERCOUNTERPOINT

SomeSensibleDude wrote:

Here's a sample of some of the reviews for "Jerome Bixby's The Man From Earth":

- "A well crafted and intelligent film... with smart dialogue, convincing performances and a captivating concept" - mosuki.com

- "All in all, a great movie." - Jason Weiner, "Jason Watches Movies"

- "A fascinating tale of time/space travel" - Joe Kempes - laneytower.com

- "The Man From Earth restores dignity to science fiction of the mind" - Michael Guillen - twitch.com

- "One of the most thought provoking films we had the privelige to see" - Spiritual Cinema Circle

- "The Man From Earth is a perfect venue for Bixby's brand of philosophical sci-fi" - Jay A. Fernandez - Los Angeles Times

- "The acting is terrific." - Martha Thomases - ComicMix

- "A tall tale... that ends with a devistatingly clever twist." - Michael Janusonis - The Providence Journal

- "An intelligent fantasy" - EdGrant - Video Business

- "Great acting performances... with an ending you wouldn't want to miss. - Hock Teh - ign.com
- "Jerome Bixby's last written work has turned out to be his best" - Hock Teh - ign.com

- "A mind bending drama... It sure beats watching Transformers." - Nick Lyons - DVD Talk

- "I enjoyed The Man From Earth... It's a nice compliment to Bixby's
work, and it's a solid film." - Drew "Moriarity" McWeeney - Aint It
Cool News

Based on the reviews here and the comments & reviews on imdb, you are clearly in the minority.

All in all, wow. I feel honored Emerson was our judge, and that he spent time with us on yesterday of all days, where his father's last script's movie was finally released.

May it turn into a runaway success man!

Day of Days

Well, my movie came out on DVD this past Tuesday. To celebrate, John Whitney had the idea of a DVD release party. So we had one at Scott Spears' production Partners studio. It was a blast. As per usual, I had no idea how many people to anticipate. You can invite people, but I had no clue how many would actually show up. As someone so eloquently said to me on the phone earlier in the day, "I don't want to waste my time because I don't think anyone's showing up…" and to be honest, I didn't either. Some people didn't show up, but a great number of people did.

I saw several people I had not seen in a long while, some since the shoot in 2005. Others, I was really glad they didn't show up. Not all my memories from HORRORS OF WAR are great ones. We celebrated, but there was one thing in small supply – DVD's of the movie itself.

I woke up early on Tuesday, anticipating the party, but mostly anxious about the DVD itself. I had not seen a proof copy or had anything to do with the promotion (or lack thereof) for the DVD. I gave them a plethora of extras on DVCPRO to use or not use. It was way more than they could ever fit on a single disc, but I wanted to provide them with options. We recorded a commentary track, which to me was the no brainer.

My single biggest anxiety lied with the audio soundtrack of the whole movie. The DVD specs boasted a commentary track and "5.1 Surround". The original sound mix, both in stereo and 5.1 are substandard. It's not Cobblestone Studio's fault as we were on the same page. Over a disagreement with the Executive producer of the film as to what constitutes a good sound mix, we lost this battle because he believes "If you can't see it, you shouldn't hear it…" which is an appalling concept. One of the reasons our original 3.5 minute scene worked so well was because we made up for the small number of people on screen by implying a larger number with sound FX. It worked staggeringly well. In the final sound mix, that same scene plays thin to the point of anorexia. For the final delivery to our distributor, I had added back in several more layers of gun sounds, sound FX, and even some unused incidental music. To my horror, I did this in stereo, but not in Surround sound. This scared me to death that the bad sound mix might be on the DVD without all the extra work I did.

I did order a copy of the movie, but it had not arrived and I wanted to see it. Unfortunately, none of the retail stores in Columbus were carrying the title for sale. Best Buy's store manager told me they could not allocate the valuable shelf space because they wanted the slots for Spider-Man 3. Thankfully, Blockbuster Video had 4 copies on the shelf. I could at least hold the box in my hand. Doing that forced me to sign up for an account and rent the movie. I had to shell out $4.68 to rent my own damn movie. What a sad, sad world we live in. The clerk at the store told me he watched that movie the night before, so I asked if he liked it. He said it was great. He then went on to tell me he lived in Youngstown and that he recognized the old rubber factory where we shot the ending of the film.

Because I was in a mad rush to finish a big client project BEFORE the party, I could only skim the DVD and its extras. Good news and bad news abound. The bad news? There was no commentary track, even though it was listed as an extra by the distributor. The good news? It does contain my sound mix and that has been remastered in 5.1 surround. As for other extras, they included a nice selection of the web docs (with a weird intro they cut), plus even B-Roll and the Visual FX demo.

The party started at 7:00PM on a Tuesday night. We packed the house. I was relieved. Had a blast, spoke to a ton of people, saw some old friends, and met some new people. It was a party after all. I speak the obvious. Even my parents came to the party.

How does it feel to see your own movie on a shelf and being rented at Blockbuster? It feels great! More people should get to feel this way. I'm on top o' the world. My movie is out there in the world. Sean Velie emailed me from Hollywood and snapped a pic of 4 copies on the shelf at Blockbuster, all 4 rented out. Someone called Phil Garrett and told him that they had 4 copies at a Blockbuster in some obscure little Florida town, all rented.

Since there wasn't room, we've made the commentary track a free download on the site. CLICK HERE, it's a 28 meg download of an MP3, so feel free & put on your Ipod or MP3 player, and cue it up with the start of the DVD and enjoy the commentary with directors Peter John Ross & John Whitney with producer Philip R. Garrett.

The review in our local paper, the Columbus Dispatch was very good! Local filmmakers rarely get reviewed or mentioned in that publication, so this is a major coup for us.

CLICK HERE TO READ DISPATCH REVIEW

Not everyone likes the movie. Then again, I don't know of a single movie that every single person likes, so you get used to it. I like this movie. Hell, I even love it, warts and all. I'm very proud of what WE did. We made this movie and we have come a long way.

Now the movie belongs to everyone else. The Boo sleeps well tonight. The Boo is happy. Have peace my acolytes.

- Peter John Ross
- Co-director, Co-writer, producer of HORRORS OF WAR
