About Me: My name is Tom Laughlin, and I'm from a small town called Bel Aire, Kansas. I'm a Mormon. I'm 26. I started making films back in high-school, with writing & directing a feature film project "Overdrive" as a sophmore. Upon returning home from a 2 year LDS mission to Sao Paulo Brazil, came home wrote and directed a (mini-DV) college feature suspense thriller "Train of Thought" on a $1,000 budget, used a local historical train yard museum, and filmed the whole feature in just 3 days. There was no DVD release or theatre release, but it did get shown at my former college, Wichita State University, as a local Wichita premiere, which very suprisingly turned out over a hundred students, and 20-30 local Kansas indie filmmakers. I moved to Provo Utah, walked into my dorm, sat down, and starting writing another screenplay, before even unpacking. Before coming to Provo Utah, 4 years ago, I was "ex-fianceed" by my girlfriend Kate back in Kansas - for me wanting to be a film director. So, I walked away from WSU Business College, a great paying job, and a girlfriend, and I moved to Utah - where I met my wife Sara. I graduated from Utah Valley State College last Decemeber 2005. During college, I had never heard of a "short film", so I took my focus on making higher quality and more developed material into shooting several shorts. I was also skipping classes, sneeking my way onto film sets, and working as a free labor PA on numerous local film projects. I worked with two college buddies on various Utah Valley State College (UVSC) college commercials, music videos, and short films - that all went on to win several college film festival awards. After graduating from Utah Valley State College, I went to work and still currently for a small production company as a production assistant and project manger. My hobbies include renting & watching movies, reading, screenwriting, directing personal short films and playing X-box. I have 8 complete feature scripts written, with 4 being written. The greatest event I've ever witnessed was my son, Connor, being born. When you have a family, everything changes. You have to sometimes compromise, not necessarily give up your Hollywood director dreams, but you change as an artist and your work gets smarter, better, and more mature. I love my wife and 14 month old Connor. The two things that make me the most happy in life are my family, and making films. |
